Upon restart my computer changes resolution to 640x480. How do I fix it?

Hello!

For about 5 months my computer has been doing this. It hasn't been an issue until recently where it now results in certain games crashing while it loads, or freezes. Oddly it only affects when I restart the computer or I open up Steam. This does not happen when I open any other application or do anything else on my computer. The problem comes in that I don't know what is causing it. If it is Windows or Steam. I looked at countless and videos and guides on what to do and nothing has worked. I reinstalled my graphics multiple times. Changed as many settings as I could. (Though a lot of them were already off by default) In regards to the other thing causing this issue, Steam. I won't go into it much as I will seek help on Steam itself.

If this seems likely to be a computer-side issue, I would love help! Apologies if this ends up being an issue of an application on windows and not windows itself, I just want to make sure I can cover all bases.

    Hello, Lillie K.

    Welcome to Microsoft Community!

From your description, it appears that your device automatically changes resolution to 640x480 after the game crashes and restarts. you are experiencing crashes while playing. Please don't hesitate to let me know if I've misunderstood your situation or if you have something to add.

I believe you have gone to the graphics card manufacturer's website to get the latest drivers and set the resolution correctly. I will continue to share some information with you.

    1. Disable Windows compatibility mode

If certain programs such as Steam are running in compatibility mode, it may cause resolution issues:

    • Locate the shortcut or executable for Steam (usually in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam).
    • Right-click and select Properties.
    • Go to the Compatibility tab and make sure “Run this program in compatibility mode” is unchecked.

    2. Reinstall the display drivers

If the problem persists, try uninstalling the graphics driver completely and reinstalling it:

    • Open Device Manager.
    • Open the Device Manager. Locate the Display Adapter, right-click on your graphics card and select Uninstall Device.
    • In the Uninstall device option, select “Remove the driver software for this device”.
    • Once the uninstallation is complete, restart your computer and Windows should automatically install the basic drivers.
    • Then manually install the latest driver.

    3. Check for Windows updates

Make sure Windows is up to date, sometimes a new version can help to fix some unexpected bugs:

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for available updates.

    4. Try to repair the system

    • Search for CMD, find thecommand prompt, and choose to run in administrator mode.
    • Enter the following commands one by one, make sure to execute the next command after the previous one is completed.

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    SFC /Scannow

    • After the scanning is completed, you can check the scanning information to see if the problem has been detected and fixed.

If the problem disappears during the above two steps, please try to remove the installed antivirus software/system optimization software/system monitoring software on your computer one by one until the problem disappears.

These are some of the actions we can still try at this point for system level problems.

If the situation ultimately stems from the game program, we can try to lower the settings within the game that have a high-performance footprint:

Try lowering the game's graphics settings, especially options related to graphics load, such as resolution, shadows, and texture quality, to see if this improves the game's stability.

I'll look forward to your help from Steam as well, and you're welcome to share more information with me if you can.

I am always here to support you.

    Best Regards.
