Can I make a Win 10 recovery USB stick from my Win 11 laptop?

I came home from a trip to find my desktop Win10 computer would not boot up properly. I'm getting error code 0xc0000225. I did some searching and found various options and tried them all. I am still getting messages as I go through the repair options that each option cannot be completed (even wiping the C: drive with a fresh installation ["fully clean"] from the recovery USB drive I made). It could not repair, restore, etc. None of the Troubleshoot options onscreen worked. "There was a problem recovering your PC..." System restore did not work. Uninstalling updates did not work. "There was a problem uninstalling the update."

So, it's not that these solutions made it through and still didn't work. None of these possible solutions even got started.

But could it be because I created the recovery disk from my Win11 laptop? If that isn't an issue, then I am stumped and am beginning to think it could be faulty hardware.

UPDATE: After a little more sleuthing, I did find out how to create a Win10 recovery disk on this Win11 laptop. But I got all the same problems, although it did SEEM to start the Windows installation and made it up to about 10% before giving me the same error message about not being able to repair my PC.

UPDATE: After trying many different things, different boot orders, and doing some diagnostics on the health of all the drives in my desktop computer, I chose to purchase a new SSD (1 TB) to reinstall Windows.

I unplugged the original, small 128GB SSD that came with the computer (and that did not really have anything of value on it), and I plugged the new SSD in there and restarted, with the USB stick Win10 Pro recovery files as the boot-up choice.

It finally installed easily. With my OneDrive subscription, I got back most of my files already because they were accessible on any computer, including the laptop I've been using for the past 10 days.

There are some files that were backed up only on Carbonite and I am in the process of retrieving those. This included many photos and videos, along with my Outlooks .pst files. So, for right now, I have emails dating back only to Oct. 1. But the data is all there in Carbonite--it just takes a while to get back what I still need.

One small annoyance: ALL those files WERE on the 3 TB drive when I first came here (I could see how little free space it currently had). But when it was suggested that I format the one SSD to start over with Windows, ever since then the 3 TB drive was shown as having ALL its space free, as if it had also formatted THAT drive. (No, I did not accidentally choose the wrong drive. The SSD drive DID format, and it was the only drive I chose to format before deciding to just buy a new SSD.)

So, I have no clue how that happened, but it's essentially why I have to go back to Carbonite to restore all those files. It'll mean a lot of boring restoration time, but at least nothing was lost.

This is a cautionary tale to everyone to ALWAYS USE some form of cloud backup!

I'm happy to be back using my main desktop computer again. Thank you for helping me in the earlier stages of this problem. All is currently well again.

    Hi Linda,

Yes, you can create a Windows 10 recovery USB stick from your Windows 11 laptop, but it’s important to ensure that you use the correct version of the recovery media. Since you’re encountering error code 0xc0000225, it’s often related to boot configuration issues, and creating the recovery USB from your Windows 11 laptop should not directly cause these problems.

Given that you've already tried several repair options and even a fresh installation without success, it's possible that the issue lies beyond the recovery media. Here are a few things to consider:

    1. Compatibility: When creating the recovery USB, make sure you download the Windows 10 installation media specifically. This ensures that all components are tailored for Windows 10, which is what your desktop requires.
    2. Hardware Issues: Since you mentioned that the recovery options didn’t even start properly, it might indicate a potential hardware issue, such as a failing hard drive or RAM problems. You could try running diagnostics on your hardware if your computer’s manufacturer provides a tool for that.
    3. BIOS/UEFI Settings: Check your BIOS/UEFI settings to ensure that the boot order is correct and that the hard drive is being detected properly.
    4. Repair Tools: If you haven’t already, try using the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to access advanced repair options. Sometimes, running commands like bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, or bootrec /rebuildbcd in the Command Prompt can resolve boot issues.
    5. External Hardware: Disconnect any unnecessary external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.) that could interfere with the boot process and try booting again.

Here are the links for downloading the recovery media for both Windows 10 and Windows 11:

    • For Windows 11: Download Windows 11 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...)

    • For Windows 10: Download Windows 10 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-downlo...)

If you’re still facing issues after trying these suggestions, it might be worth considering a professional assessment of your desktop for any underlying hardware problems.

Please let me know if you need further assistance, and keep me updated.

    Best regards,

    Arvind
