I am about to buy a M.2 Nvme SSD 8TB storage and swap my laptop’s inbuilt 500GB SSD but I want to know how do I install Windows on this 8TB SSD because I came to know that Windows supports only 2TB max.

Please explain the full steps. Thanks.

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

The 2TB drive limit is just for drives with an MBR partition style, if the drive is setup with a GPT partition style, then there is no limit, but it would be best to partition a drive that size.

To install Windows on that new drive, you would need to create a bootable Windows 10 or 11 USB on an empty 8GB USB flash drive and use that to clean install Windows on that drive, and at the start of the process, you will see that drive in the second window, create a new 2TB partition on the drive, then install Windows onto that partition, you can later create a 6TB partition for your data... etc. on the drive once Windows is installed.

That is the correct setting for a Windows 11 installation.

System Information says that BIOS Mode is UEFI.

If Windows is already installed on your laptop, click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

    2

If your laptop only has one SSD slot for a drive, then if you cannot connect both drives to your laptop at the same time, you cannot clone the old drive onto the new drive, you would need to perform a clean install of Windows.

Is that all? But I read that the laptop should support UEFI to support GPT partitioned drive to flash Windows.

My laptop is MSI Modern 14 B5M Ryzen 5 5500U.

And, additionally I will not be knowing what type of 8TB SSD would be - MBR or GPT. And my laptop has only 1 slot so I need to clone my existing Windows 11 Pro to this new 8TB SSD.
