How do I activate Windows 11 with Windows 10 Pro product key?

Hi Microsoft Support,

I own an old computer which runs Windows 10 Pro. I have both the 25 character product key and have linked it to my Microsoft account. The computer is very old and no longer works properly so I intend to get rid of it. I have checked and it definitely has a retail licence of Windows which has transfer rights.

I recently built a new computer which I has Windows 11 Home, and would like to transfer my product key/digital licence from the old one to it. I have tried entering the product key, but get an error message saying that it does not work, with error code 0xc004f050. I understand that the editions are different - Pro on the old computer and Home on the new computer - which means I need to upgrade the new computer to Windows 11 Pro. I have tried this in the Microsoft Store but it just takes me back to the exact same 'enter product key' page in settings where my Windows 10 Pro product key does not work.

I have also tried the 'I recently changed hardware' option but met the same issue that the editions do not match.

I cannot upgrade the old computer to Windows 11 as it does not meet the requirements.

Do I need to uninstall Windows 11 Home on the new computer and install Windows 11 Pro?

Is there any other way of activating so that I do not have to backup and reinstate all my personal files?

Thanks

If you are using a generic Pro product key then you cannot activate with that.

    VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

However you should be able to use it to upgrade Home to pro and then use the activation troubleshooter to transfer your Pro licence, if the licence is valid to be transferred.

First make sure the new PC is offline. Go to Change product key in Settings and enter the key above. That should start the upgrade process so follow any prompts.

Once you can confirm in Settings that you have Pro edition installed then make sure the PC is online and use the activation troubleshooter. If the Pro edition licence has transfer rights it should transfer to the new hardware.

I just want to confirm whether you are using an OEM or retail key. If you are using an OEM key, please note that it can only be used with the same hardware, and OEM keys cannot be transferred if the hardware changes.

For instructions on reactivating Windows after a hardware change, you can refer to this link: Reactivating Windows after a hardware change. (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/rea...)

    Hi Jayser62,

I have reviewed the issue, and from my understanding You don’t need to uninstall Windows 11 Home and reinstall Windows 11 Pro. Instead, you can upgrade your current Windows 11 Home installation to Pro using your Windows 10 Pro product key. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you transfer your product key and activate Windows 11 Pro:

    1. Upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro

    • Open Settings:

o Press Windows + I to open the Settings app.

    • Navigate to System:

o Click on System and then select Activation from the left sidebar.

    • Change Product Key:

o Under Upgrade your edition of Windows, click on Change product key.

o Enter your Windows 10 Pro product key and click Next.

o If prompted, follow the instructions to complete the upgrade to Windows 11 Pro.

    1. Using Command Prompt for Activation

If you encounter any issues while trying to upgrade via Settings, you can also use the Command Prompt:

    1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator:

o Press Windows + X and select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).

    1. Enter the following command:

    slmgr /ipk <your-product-key>

Replace <your-product-key> with your 25-character Windows 10 Pro product key.

    1. Activate Windows:

o After entering the product key, type the following command to activate:

    slmgr /ato

    1. Troubleshooting Error Code 0xc004f050

If you continue to receive error code 0xc004f050, here are some potential solutions:

    • Check Key Type: Make sure that your product key is indeed a retail key. OEM keys cannot be transferred.

    • Contact Microsoft Support: If the product key still does not work, contact Microsoft Support. They can assist you in verifying the key and troubleshooting activation issues.

    1. Using the Activation Troubleshooter

If you run into problems during activation, you can use the Activation Troubleshooter:

    1. Go to Settings: Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
    2. Click on Troubleshoot: This can help resolve any issues with activation.

    Additional Notes

    • Data Backup: It's always good practice to back up your data before making significant changes to your operating system, even if you're not uninstalling Windows 11 Home.

    • Reinstalling Windows 11 Pro: If you still encounter issues after following the steps above, reinstalling Windows 11 Pro might be a last resort, but it's usually not necessary.

Following these steps should help you transfer your Windows 10 Pro product key and activate Windows 11 Pro on your new computer.

I hope these steps help resolve your issue. If you need further assistance, feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,

    Arvind
