PC Freezes After Closing Games on Steam – Need Help

Hi everyone,

I’m encountering a strange issue when I play games on Steam. The game runs perfectly fine, but as soon as I close the game, my PC starts freezing. Here's what happens:

  • The system remains somewhat responsive, but I can’t open or close windows properly.
  • When I try to open new windows or apps, they don’t respond at all.
  • I also can’t shut down or restart the system through the normal method – I’m forced to hold down the power button to manually turn off the computer.

I’m not sure what could be causing this, and I was hoping to get some advice.

My system:

MB Z97-A

CPU i7 4790k

RAM 32gb DDR3

SSD 1tb

Windows for home | Windows 10 | Performance and system failures

    Hi ,

I understand that Razer Cortex is probably optimized and when you are in the game it activates Game Turbo mode and in this mode it deactivates processes and services that it considers unnecessary and when you close the game it returns to normal mode at that moment that causes the crash I was already thinking that you had Iobit Game Booster some users had reported some problems but this with Ryzen this must be the problem

One thing is that if you updated the motherboard without formatting Windows may have problems with the drivers in the future it is always good to do a clean installation to update hardware in the motherboard and processor issue.

I am glad that you found the smart problem that is a definitive solution.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Ivan,

I’m using Avast as my antivirus software. I’ve tried disabling Wallpaper Engine, but it didn’t fix the issue.

My current motherboard is an Asus Z97-A, which I upgraded to recently after using Asus H81M-E/M52AD/DP_MB. At first, I thought the problem might be related to the motherboard, but after more testing, I don’t think that’s the case anymore.

What I discovered is that Razer Cortex, which I had completely forgotten was active, seems to have been the issue. I’ve now disabled Razer Cortex, and for the moment, my computer isn’t freezing anymore. Of course, I’ll need to test this over a longer period to be sure, but right now it looks like Razer Cortex was the problem.

For others reading this thread: Razer Cortex is a PC boost software that I was using before I upgraded my motherboard and CPU.

Thanks for all your help so far, Ivan!

    Hi ,

Do you have any third-party antivirus software?

Have you tried disabling the wallpaper engine?

Is your motherboard an Asus, Gigabyte or Asrock model?

    Hi Ivan,

Thanks for your quick response! I really appreciate your help, and I hope you can assist me in figuring this out.

This issue happens with every game I play on Steam. I can start up a game and play for just a couple of minutes or hours, but as soon as I close the game, my PC freezes. It becomes unresponsive to almost everything I try to do. For example:

    • If I try to open a website or any other app, nothing responds.
    • I use Wallpaper Engine and I see when my pc freezes bc the background stops
    • Even when I try to shut down or restart the system, it won’t close down, and I have to use the power button to force a shutdown. But everytime I start up the PC everything is fine until I play a game.

    Here’s what I’ve already tried:

    1. Updated my graphics card drivers.
    2. Checked system updates to make sure Windows is up to date.
    3. Verified game files on Steam for the games I play.
    4. Disabled overlays (Steam, Discord, NVIDIA) and other third-party programs.
    5. Ran SFC and DISM to check for system file corruption.
    6. Used DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to reinstall my graphics drivers.

However, I’m still running into the same problem. I’ve also been trying to locate mini-dump files and the Event Viewer to gather more info, but I’m having trouble finding those so I can show anything that could point to the root cause of the issue.
