Hello Gavin, I'm Johrelle a fellow Windows/Microsoft user. I'm happy to assist you.

There's a chance the USB port you're using might be malfunctioning. Try plugging the controller into a different USB port on your computer.

If it's not the USB or the USB port, try reinstalling the Xbox controller drivers. Search for "Device Manager" in the Windows search bar and open it. Expand the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section. Look for your Xbox controller device. It might be listed as an "Xbox Wireless Controller" or something similar. Right-click on the controller device and select "Update driver". Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software". If Windows doesn't find any updates, right-click on the controller device again and select "Uninstall device". Check the box next to "Delete the driver software for this device" and click "Uninstall". Restart your computer. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver for your Xbox controller.

I know this is old, but I spent an entire day losing my mind because I could only connect my controller to Bluetooth and it would randomly disconnect and reconnect. I could not get the controller to show up in Xbox Accessories via USB cable or the USB WIFI connector I bought. It worked awhile back but I can go months without needing the controller for gaming.

What finally worked was going into Device Manager and deleting a bunch of duplicate devices. I also removed the controller from Bluetooth.

Universal Serial Bus Controllers - My mouse and keyboard are wireless and for some reason I had like 5-10 duplicates of each one showing as hubs. I uninstalled all of them and put the USB dongles back in. After that I only had one of each. I also had more USB Root Hubs and Generic USB Hubs than I had slots on my computer. I removed every physical device from my computer USB slots and then uninstalled every thing that was left over.

Human Interface Devices - Again, I had like 5 times the number of devices showing up here than possible. With everything still unplugged from my computer, I uninstalled everything that looked like duplicates.

After doing all of this I shut down my computer and plugged everything back in their slots. When I turned my computer back on everything worked fine AND MY CONTROLLER USB WIFI DONGLE WAS LIGHTING UP AGAIN. My controller also immediately connected via USB cable with no issues!

My best guess is over years of buying new devices and moving the USB dongles around slots, I kept creating new virtual ports and blocked my computer from recognizing more. Who knows, but this worked and I could not find this documented anywhere else online.

I'm leaving this here in hopes that maybe it helps you a year later or anyone else that comes along like myself in the future.

Have you tried reinstalling the Xbox controller drivers as I suggested? If you did, try following the official Xbox support troubleshooting process for connecting Xbox controller in their website: https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-ne...
