"Dolby Atmos for home theater" option missing under "Spatial audio" win 11

Anonymous

Current setup: NVIDIA RTX 3060 > over HDMI > Sony Bravia TV > Over HDMI ARC > Sony HT-S20R 5.1 Dolby digital home theater.

Earlier, I was using an HDMI audio extractor to connect my PC directly to the HT-S20R (Over the SPDIF). I had no issue, playing the Dolby content to it from the NETFLIX desktop app.

Since the Netflix has now updated their app, and moved to a web wrapper version, I will need to use the Dolby access plug in order to get the surround sound from Microsoft edge browser.

However, I have tried all the guides/information available out there in the forums, but the option for "Dolby Atmos for home theater" is not showing up anyhow.

    Dear saurabh moury

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

Based on the issue you have described, there may be a configuration issue with your current settings and device that prevents you from enabling the “Dolby Atmos for Home Theater” option in Windows 11's “Spatial Audio” settings. “Dolby Atmos for Home Theater option in Windows 11's Spatial Audio settings.

Below are some possible causes and corresponding solutions:

    ________________________________________

    Problem Analysis

The following points may cause the “Dolby Atmos for Home Theater” option to be missing:

    1. The device or driver does not fully support “Dolby Atmos”.

Your Sony HT-S20R is a 5.1-channel sound system that supports the Dolby Digital codec, but the “Dolby Atmos for Home Theater” feature is usually not supported by default. If the hardware does not support Dolby Atmos, this option cannot be enabled.

When transferring audio via HDMI ARC, many TVs only support Dolby Digital (AC3) and PCM (Linear Audio), not Dolby Atmos, as the bandwidth limitations of the standard HDMI ARC channel may not be sufficient to support the complex object audio format (Atmos). o If you are using an HDMI extractor with an HDMI ARC channel, you can use the Dolby Atmos feature to transfer audio from the HDMI ARC channel to the HDMI ARC channel.

This is also limited to support Dolby Digital or DTS if using an HDMI extractor and SPDIF, Atmos cannot be transferred over SPDIF.

    1. Windows configuration issues.

You may not have correctly installed the Dolby Access software or enabled the associated plug-in, but have not correctly associated the audio output device.

The sound card driver is not properly supported or NVIDIA's HDMI audio driver needs to be updated. 3.

    1. HDMI ARC limitations.

Standard HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) does not support panoramic audio in Atmos on most TVs, and can only support the simplified Dolby Atmos over Dolby Digital Plus format (known as DD+ Atmos), and cannot transmit the higher quality Atmos formats (such as Dolby TrueHD Atmos). TrueHD Atmos).

    1. Netflix and Edge browser support issues .

The Netflix Web browser version has limited support for Dolby Atmos. If Netflix's device detection system does not detect a compatible Atmos system, the Atmos option may not be enabled. o The Atmos option is not supported in Netflix.

    Solution

    1. Ensure all hardware supports Dolby Atmos

-Confirm that your Sony Bravia TV and Sony HT-S20R do support Dolby Atmos via HDMI ARC (as a general rule, HDMI ARC only supports compressed formats such as Dolby Digital Plus, and not all devices support the DD+ format of Atmos).

-If your TV does not support eARC (Enhanced ARC) functionality, consider upgrading your TV or using a more direct connection (e.g., HDMI directly to the sound system rather than to the TV).

    1. Installation and Verification of Dolby Access and Related Driver Settings

    Install Dolby Access:

i Open the Microsoft Store, search for Dolby Access and install it. ii.

After completing the installation, open the app and follow the prompts to complete the setup, making sure Atmos is enabled.

    • After installation, if the “Dolby Atmos for Home Theater” option does not appear:

    i. Go to Settings > System > Sound > Output Devices. ii.

    i. Go to Settings > System > Sound > Output Devices. ii. Select your HDMI output device (the device connected to your TV or stereo). iii.

iii. Click Device Properties > Additional Device Properties. iv.

iv. In the Advanced tab, make sure that High Quality Audio Format is enabled by selecting the highest bit rate and sampling rate (e.g. 24bit, 192Khz).

    • If nothing changes, make sure your NVIDIA drivers are up to date, especially the part that supports HDMI audio.
    1. Improving Connectivity

-If your HT-S20R or TV's HDMI ARC does not support Atmos, consider the following alternative: by connecting the audio directly:

Use HDMI to connect the RTX 3060 directly to the HT-S20R instead of through your TV.

level to an eARC (enhanced ARC) device:

HDMI eARC supports higher bandwidth and can transmit higher quality Dolby Atmos (e.g. TrueHD Atmos).

If your TV does not currently support eARC, you can upgrade to an eARC-enabled TV.

    1. Check Netflix Application Configuration

To get Atmos audio from Netflix, make sure the following conditions are met:

o With a Netflix Premium subscription (Atmos is only available to Premium plan subscribers).

Play in Microsoft Edge (latest version) or the Netflix UWP desktop app.

Check that the device is recognized by Netflix as Atmos-compatible (this is usually supported by content that displays the “Dolby Atmos” logo).

If you still can't see the Atmos logo, try the following:

Clear your browser cache to prevent Netflix from experiencing detection issues. o Try turning off Dolby Access.

Try disabling Dolby Access and then re-enabling it.

    1. Debugging Spatial Audio Settings

Try to manually enable spatial audio through the Windows sound settings:

Right-click the volume icon on the taskbar and select Sound Settings.

Select HDMI audio device in Output Devices.

Click Attachment Properties > Spatial sound and select Dolby Atmos for Home Theater (if the option is still missing, it means that the device or connection method is not fully supported).

    1. Test other content sources

If Netflix is unable to output Atmos, try passing through other Atmos-enabled content sources, such as:

Disney+ or Apple TV+ (if Atmos content is supported).

Make sure that the content itself supports Dolby Atmos and that your device is decoding it correctly during playback.

    ________________________________________

    Summary

The key to the current problem may lie in the limitations of the device connection method and Windows configuration. Below is a general idea of how to solve the problem:

    1. check the compatibility of the sound system, TV, PC, and HDMI ARC to see if an upgrade to eARC is required.
    2. Ensure that Dolby Access is installed and configured correctly.
    3. Use PC HDMI to connect directly to the stereo, bypassing the TV's HDMI ARC limitations (if any).
    4. test the content source to ensure that the media and devices playing it detect Dolby Atmos properly.

If the hardware of your Sony Bravia or HT-S20R does not support the correct Atmos format, “Dolby Atmos for Home Theater” may not be enabled on the current device. In this case, upgrading the hardware (e.g. an eARC-enabled stereo or TV) would be a better solution. Further details if you still have questions

    Hello.

After going thru endless research to solve this problem i’ve finally found a workaround here: https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/150zpyz/comment/k77obhz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

So I had to switch my sound system to optical source, wait a bit because Windows 11 audio properties seemed to bug, and finally Dolby Atmos appeared in the spatial sound list.

Running test worked fine as Dolby digital after everything was setup as Dolby Atmos ( Nvidia high définition audio and spatial sound ).

Just need an optical cable between the TV and the sound system.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Shawn,

My TV and the audio system do not support DOLBY ATMOS. However, as far as I know, the Dolby access app is backwards compatible and works with the Dolby Digital devices as well.
