(Windows 10) The "Open" image option on my right click context menu has moved by itself and doesn't work correctly anymore

As seen in the 2 images when I right click an image the "Open" option is all of a sudden below "set as background" when it used to be the top option. If that was the only issue I'd probably just get used to its new location but its not.

When I click Open image now it doesn't fully open the image. The image appears behind everything else I have open, on my taskbar flashing orange but doesn't pop up, I have to actively click it on the taskbar to see it. This is a minor issue but annoying nonetheless.

It's a bug in the latest Photos version. The Photos shell extension causes this issue and removing it fixes the problem.

Please see the workaround I posted here.

I see. I don't encounter this in Windows 11 so it could be a bug when using the latest version of the Photos app in Windows 10. I'm glad that the legacy version works for you, but I still recommend submitting a bug report within the Photos app's feedback link in settings.

Thanks. Terminate and resetting didn't work but using the photos legacy app as default photo viewer opens the image fully.

The default Photos app remains broken as is, opened images open in the background and "Open" image from right click menu is still in the wrong place.(unless that was just part of a windows update I'm not aware of?)

I even uninstalled the Photos app and "Open" was at the top again in the correct place in the right click menu. Re-installing Photos from the microsoft store fresh and the problem comes back. I guess I'll just be using the legacy viewer from now on then heh.

Hi Michael, I am Paulo and I'd like to help.

It seems to be a problem with the file type protocol. Have you tried resetting the Photos app and then reset it again as the default? In Start menu, right-click on the Photos app > More > App settings. Scroll down to Terminate and then Reset. After that is set, right-click on the .png file > Properties > Change and select Photos app.

If that didn't work, try to download the Photos Legacy app and set it as the default for PNG files and see if it helps.
