Xbox Controller Windows 11 headset MIC not working - SOLVED

THIS IS A FIX that worked for me and not a question, cos I'm yet to find a valid answer anywhere.

For controllers plugged into USB, where your headset works to hear people but your MIC doesn't. Seems to be a Win 11 issue primarily... TRY THIS...

Swap Cables.

It was that simple after 3 different controllers, 3 Pcs (1x 22H win10, 1x 23H win11, 1x 24H win 11).

Mine worked on the win10 22H PC, then I built a new PC with win11 23H.

I had to upgrade the New 23H build to 24H because of another major incompatibility issue, THANKS MICROSOFT..., but when I did I lost the MIC from the headset, it would detect, but no audio pickup.

I fought with it for HOURS. Tested that same controller on an existing 23H laptop and no issues. BASE USB AUDIO Driver Versions ARE DIFFERENT, and cant be readily swapped or downgraded.

The original controller also had a similar issue on the 23H Laptop, so i started to think it was the controller, as a different controller worked on the 23H Laptop...

but no, when using the 23H-24H PC both controllers worked the same... NO MIC PICKUP.

I tried using a XBOX Wireless adapter and BOTH controllers HAD MIC pickup..... progress....

But I don't want to use the Wireless Adapter and be constantly forgetting to charge the controllers...

Now....

I tried 3 different cable, Usb-C to Usb-A... the SAME cables I've been using for at least a year... NOTHING... and then for some reason I decided to try a Usb-C to Usb-C cable...

AND IT WORKED

USB-C to USB-C... that's all I did, swapped cables. The original controller I thought was faulty worked straight away, the other controller worked straight away.

I've seen so many of these posts and none of them have offered a working answer, I hope someone who needs to see this does before they go mental like i did for 8 hours...

Swap cables...

    Hello, JohnRowe4

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

Thank you very much for sharing with us your experience and approach to resolving the issue of the Xbox controller not working with the headset microphone on Windows 11. We realize that technical issues can be inconvenient, and your feedback is critical to improving our user experience.

In order to help as many users as possible with similar issues, I'll be documenting your workarounds and sharing them with those who need them. Below is a summary of the solution you provided, which we hope will be helpful to other users:

When using a USB-connected Xbox controller, audio is heard properly on the headset, but the microphone does not work, especially on Windows 11 systems.

    Solution.

Try using a different USB-C to USB-C connecting cable instead of the USB-C to USB-A connecting cable used previously.

After replacing the connection cable, the microphone immediately returned to normal operation.

After several tests, including different grips, different computers and system versions, it was finally realized that the problem stemmed from the type of USB connection cable. the USB-C to USB-C cable effectively solved the situation where the microphone did not work.

I'm glad to see that this method solved the nuisance for you and hope it can help more users. If other users also encounter similar problems, please refer to the above steps to try.

If you have any other valuable comments or need further help, please feel free to let me know.

    Best Regards,

Best i could find there was no other option, you can't roll back the drivers. There's no way to use a different driver, there's no software fix available. Only way i could get it to work was the usb-C cable.

MS has yet again broken something that has been fully functional for over 10 years.

So that's it? What if your PC doesn't have a USB-C jack on it? Is there a driver update fix in the works or are those without USB-C jacks on their computers just SoL?
