How to fix alt+tab keyboard delay while playing games?

When I play games and I use alt+tab to exit fullscreen because I want to use spotify or youtube, after that I alt+tab back to the game for some reason my keyboard has delay, for example when I press wasd to move in the game, it takes some time to move, but after some seconds or a minute the delay goes away.

Also it makes apps in the background that make noice (for example using edge to listen to music) stop until I alt+tab to get out of the game. Is there any way I can make the delay stop?

I have a MSI katana 17

    Hello Αλέξανδρος Πελιβανίδης,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue with input lag and audio interruptions when using Alt + Tab in full-screen games. This is a feature or design that has to be incorporated so the system works properly and it is not a glitch. Here are a few suggestions to help resolve these problems:

    1. Disable Fullscreen Optimizations:
      • Right-click on the game executable or shortcut.
      • Select Properties.
      • Go to the Compatibility tab.
      • Check the box for Disable Fullscreen optimizations.
    2. Use Borderless Window Mode:
      • Instead of playing in full-screen mode, try switching to Borderless Window mode. This can often reduce input lag and prevent audio interruptions.
    3. Check Background Processes:
      • Open Task Manager and check for any background processes that might be using a lot of CPU or memory. Terminate any unnecessary processes to free up system resources.
    4. Disable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling:
      • Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings.
      • Turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.

These steps should help mitigate the delay and improve your overall gaming experience. If the issue persists, you might want to consider reaching out to the game's support team for further assistance.

Regarding your second issue that Edge cannot play music while working in background, we recommend you check your settings related to "Performance". These settings can prevent Edge from working or playing media sources in the background or when you are playing full-screen games.

Oh, sorry for the confusions. My mentioned settings are in Edge browser's settings page, not Windows settings. Your description looks like Windows Settings.

    Best Regards,

    William

    Hello,

I'm glad to hear that my answer partly solved your main issue. If you are using Greek as the display language in Edge, sorry to say that I'm not very sure about what the word "Performance" may appear like in Greek versions. But if you can turn into English display, you should be able to find Performance settings here in the red lined areas: (System and performance)

I am already using English as the display language but I still can't find it, when it go to setting there is a system option, not a system and performance option. Maybe we have different versions of windows

because I am using windows 11.

Thanks for the help, it solved the main issue, but the are still sometimes problems with the background music. The forth step helped solve the problem. Also I didn't understand where to find the performance setting for edge.
