Hello, karabo kabza
Welcome to the Microsoft Community.
Hello, thank you for your feedback here on your issue, it looks like your laptop is recognizing the USB connection (as you hear the connection beep) but is not displaying or interacting with your phone's data correctly.
In order to help you better, you can share your specific computer model, system version and the corresponding phone model and system version after this for subsequent search and research.
I will provide some basic troubleshooting steps for you to try first:
- Check the USB mode of your phone:
When you connect your phone, swipe down on the notification bar of your phone.
You should see a notification that says “Charging via USB” or “USB Options”.
Click on this notification and make sure it is set to **“File Transfer” or “MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)” mode. If it is set to “Charging Only ”**, the laptop will not recognize the phone as a media device.
- Replace the USB cable or port:
Sometimes, the USB cable may be damaged or only support charging. Make sure you are using a cable that supports data transfer, not just charging.
Try using a different USB port on your laptop to troubleshoot port issues.
- Check the Device Manager (Windows):
Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
Look for any devices with a yellow triangle or error symbol, especially under Portable Devices or Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
If you see a device with an error, right-click and select Uninstall Device, then disconnect the phone and reconnect it to see if Windows can automatically reinstall the driver.
- Reinstall or update the USB driver:
Open Device Manager.
Right-click on Universal Serial Bus Controller and select Update Driver.
You can also uninstall all USB controllers by selecting Uninstall Device, then restart your computer and let Windows reinstall the drivers automatically.
- Check your phone for software or driver updates:
Make sure your phone has the latest software updates installed. Sometimes outdated drivers or software can cause connection problems.
- Try connecting to another computer or phone:
Try connecting your phone to another computer or another phone to the same laptop to see if the problem is with the laptop or the phone.
- Check for conflicting software:
Sometimes device management tools like Samsung Kies, **HiSuite (Huawei)** and others may interfere with the connection. Make sure these software are up-to-date or try disabling or uninstalling them temporarily.
- Enable developer options (for advanced users):
If you are using an Android phone, go to Settings → About phone → Tap the version number 7 times consecutively to enable developer options.
Then go to Developer Options and enable USB debugging. This can sometimes help Windows recognize the phone.
You can try it out by referring to the steps above, and after that, give some feedback and I will further support you.
Best regards
