Is it "safe" to end COM Surrogate from Task Manager?

Since some recent update, when I browse photos and than, when I want to delete them, I am not able to do so because file is still opened in "com surrogate". Sometimes it is needed to wait just few seconds, sometimes minutes, sometimes even dozens of minutes before com surrogate stops "using" file and I am able to delete it.

So, question from title. If I click on com surrogate in task manager and do "End task" option, will it restart/shut down my entire system or it will just "reset" itself like windows explorer, for example?

Hi, I’m Vinay. Thanks for reaching out.

I’m here to help you today.

COM Surrogate is a legitimate Windows process that hosts COM objects to prevent system crashes.

Ending this process might temporarily stop the thumbnails or previews from being generated in File Explorer, but it shouldn't cause your system to shut down or restart. It's more like "resetting" itself similar to how Windows Explorer restarts when it encounters an issue
