Close the lid options

My close the lid option was set so that when I close the lid, my laptop would power down and when I open the lid it would power up and any programs that were not closed down would still be open in exactly the same condition as they were when I closed the lid. I was thinking the option was set to hibernate but now I don’t know because when it stopped working this way I set it to sleep and that didn’t work and I set to hibernate and that doesn’t work either. This only stopped working how I like to have it after a recent security update. Does this now mean I cannot have my lid set to what it used to do, what I want it to do, or so I now just have to make so with the best of what’s available now. So if I set it to sleep, I close my lid. When I open my lid, I have to power back up manually and my unclosed programs will still be open. If I set it to hibernate, I close my lid but my laptop does not power down properly and so when I open my lid, I have to press and hold the power button to force a shutdown and when I power up, all my unloaded programmes have also been forced to close. Thank you for reading this and for any reply you offer

    Hello,

Yes, I understand now. Essentially, you have configured the lid to put the PC into sleep mode, and upon reopening the lid, you can resume your work without needing to reopen any applications.

But now, it just simply won't resume and you need to force shutdown the laptop in order to get it working again.

Did you update/upgrade recently? Did anything happen before this started happening?

    First, disable fast startup:

    • Open Control Panel: Press Windows + R, type control, and press Enter.

    • Power Options: Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.

    • Change Settings: Click Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable.

    • Turn Off Fast Startup: Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended) and save changes.

Also, check in power settings if you have an Allow Away Mode Policy and enable/disable it depending on how it is now.

    Hello,

From what I can tell Zonealarm is also a cybersecurity app. What's the reason for having 2 anti-virus? It's doing more harm than good to your device.

Microsoft Defender is more than enough in terms of cyber security. If you want to use an external one, then just use one.

I personally would advise uninstalling both and keeping the MS Defender as it does its job very well and doesn't slow down your PC as 3rd party ones do.

Also, uninstall the security update if you can find it in the update history.

There was a recent security update which is the only thing that has had an effect (that I know of) on the way windows works. The only other recent changes that seem to have really slowed my machine is installations of bitdefender and zonealarm. My sleep issue didn’t seem to happen after those installs though. Since posting my first question, another issue seems to have come to light. I’m connected via Wi-Fi and even though my wifi symbol is showing, my connection has been lost. Sometimes my wifi symbol shows I’m no longer connected as well and when this happens, the only way to restore my connection is to save everything and reboot.

None of these were problems until the most recent security update.

Let me try this then, instead of going into start menu and selecting power and selecting one of the options, all I used to do, without saving anything I have open for example Excel, was to close my lid. I’d have a few flashing lights on my lid for a few seconds and all the fans stop and it would appear to have **** down, but when I opened my lid again, my laptop would power up again all on its own and after a short space of time I would go past my log in prompt and me Excel sheet would be exactly how I left it.

This is no longer what happens when I now close my lid. Now, all my lights stay on and my fans still spin but my screen goes black and I cannot get my work back on screen without a forced close which means I lose any work I had open that I didn’t save.

    I hope this is better

    Hi Ian,

Your issue description is very confusing, to say the least.

What I understood is that after powering the PC you would have some apps still running just as before you closed down Windows. Is that correct?

If yes, you should check this option in Settings - Account - Sign in options - Automatically save my restartable apps......

Let me know if this is what you meant.

    Regards,

    Levi
