How to move Public folders from C: to new D: drive using Win 11 Pro

What I thought would be a straightforward task is proving difficult. I'm setting up a new Dell XPS/Win 11 Pro that only shipped with a 512GB SSD. I added a 2TB SSD. I was able to redirect my user folders to D by going to System>Storage>Where new content is saved. I'm unable to figure out how to move the Public folders (Doc, Music, Video, Downloads) to D. I've looked through several posts on this topic and have yet to find a solution. I understand that the shell folder "Public" can't be moved and have created a Public folder on the new D drive. Several posts talk about right clicking on a folder like Public Documents>Properties>Location tab and using the "Move" button to select a new destination and move the folder to D. Problem is I don't have a "Move" button. I'm stuck in the mud and unable to migrate data until I resolve this problem. I'll be very appreciative of anyone who can help me out.

You can change the folder location on this page of the registry.

Create the folders on D: before changing the path. You can right-click the folder > Copy as path, to get the folder path easily.

You can change the paths for CommonDesktop, CommonDocuments, CommomMusic, Common Pictures and Common Video, do not change the other folder paths.

This will change the folder paths, but you need to manually move the files.

After changing on the registry, restart the computer to apply the changes.

Open the Start Menu, type regedit and press enter.

On the Registry Editor window, paste the path below on the address bar and press enter. Please send a screenshot of the registry editor window.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

The Public folders are part of the operating system, and they are not designed to be moved. You can try to move them on your own if you want, but then you'll have to bear whatever consequences may follow. The only folders that you can legitimately move are the folders inside your own user profile, and then only desktop, documents, downloads, music, pictures and videos.

    Hi,

I'm Rodrigo and I'll help you.

Yes, you found the right way to move the folders. You can't move the "Public" folder, only the folders inside the "Public" folder (Public Downloads, Public Documents, Public Desktop...). The procedure is: Right click the folder > Properties > Location tab > Move... > Select the folder.

Make sure to create the folder on the D: drive before moving the folder.

Example: Create "Public Documents" folder on D:, or Public/Public Documents, when you select where to move, select the "Public Documents"folder you created, not D;, otherwise the whole D: will become the Public Documents folder.
