New Windows 11 computer adverts

I've just replaced my old computer with a new Windows 11 one

I think it's infected with adware. There are adverts for apps on the start menu, the search bar at the bottom just takes me to websites instead of showing my apps and documents. There's a weather icon which shows loads of ads over the whole screen even if I don't click on it.

Now I've got a big search bar over my desktop wallpaper and ads on the Lock Screen (where I put in my password).

Also, nearly everything keeps opening up 'Bing'. I've tried changing it to Google or DuckDuckGo but it won't let me. I can't install Chrome either. It seems like the virus set everything to Bing adverts and then locked down the system. I can't even get an antivirus to install.

I really don't want to be stuck with Bing because I've already clicked on the HP site and it got me through to a call centre where they told me I had viruses all over my system and it needed professional cleaning. They also tried to take the payment directly from my online banking before they would even help me. Now I'm not sure if this was really HP or if Bing had intercepted the search results.

Any idea where I can find this stuff and remove it? Should I format with a vanilla Windows install? Should Intake it back to the retailer and get them to sort it all out?

Thank you for your time

    Hello,

If you are running Windows S Mode, that means that you can't install apps that aren't on the Microsoft Store, and you are stuck to using Microsoft Edge and Bing as your search engine. You can switch out of S Mode though. To do this, type ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=BF712690PMLF&OCID=windowssmodesupportpage in the search bar of Microsoft Edge. Open it, and then switch out of S mode. Then, you'll be able to install your favorite apps and antiviruses and change your search engine. Please note, that switching out of S Mode is a one-way change, once you go to Windows 11 Home, you can't go back to Windows 11 S Mode.

    Hope this helps.

I'm sorry to read of your first experience with Windows 11. You may be surprised to learn that this is pretty much the standard setup in Windows 11, Bing search is integrated quite heavily into the OS. You can check if this is actually the case: most of these features can be turned off just by changing settings within Windows, or right clicking the feature, or clicking 3 dots to bring up settings. You don't need to download any untrustworthy software.

Click on the start button to bring up the start menu. Click on the 3 dots. Some of the settings can be changed to turn off search highlights and web content. Now right click the start menu button, click settings. Go to personalisation. From here, you will find lots of settings for the Start Menu, Taskbar and Lock Screen. It sounds like you want to turn off Suggestions in the Start menu, Widgets on the taskbar, and widgets on the Lock Screen. Do have a look through those screens and see if there are any other preferences you'd like to change. There are various settings for Notifications elsewhere in the Settings app, so look for those too. You should be able to reduce the amount of distractions. By now, you should've managed to remove the features that were worrying you purely by changing native Windows settings.

It also sounds like you're currently in Windows 11 S mode. This is a locked down, secure version of Windows 11. You can check if this is the case by searching for ''System' or About' in the Settings app. If this is the case, then I'm pretty confident you've not been infected. One side-effect of S mode is that you cannot change your search engine or browser. You can visit your favourite search engine home page, go to the settings in Edge, and install it as an app. If you really want to leave S mode, then visit the Store app in your start menu, and search for 'Leave S mode' to find out more. If you go ahead with this, you can install any apps you like, even a third party antivirus (you can stick with Windows Security, which is free).

It does concern me that you had a bad experience with HP. If you look carefully at your browsing history in Edge, you may find that it wasn't actually HP, but the result of a sponsored advert and a possible fraud attempt. You should report this to Action Fraud or the equivalent in your country.

If you have a particular feature you need more help with, do post back.

Ok yes, thank you. It does say S mode on the box if that affects things.

I am going to get some screen shots tomorrow and see if I can add them.

    Hello,

Could you take screenshots of what you see? Windows 11 does have ads on the Start Menu, but it shouldn't prevent you from installing other browsers (unless you have Windows 11 S Mode, which I highly doubt).

Hope to hear back from you.
