Error 0x80070005 when installing Windows 11 on a newly build PC

I just built my first PC, so I attempted to install windows 11. I used a new 128Gb usb drive to install windows 11. On the installation part where you had to install drivers to connect to the internet (shown in the pic) it gave me an error, 0x80070005.

Despite following multiple troubleshooting steps, the installation process is still failing.

PC Specs:

• GPU: GeForce RTX 3060 Ventus 3x 12G OC

• CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X 6-Core, 12-Thread

• Motherboard: MSI PRO B650-S WiFi ProSeries

• RAM: G.SKILL Flare X5 Series (AMD Expo) DDR5 RAM, 32GB

• Storage: Crucial P3 Plus 1TB PCIe Gen4 M.2 SSD

Things I’ve Tried:

  1. Changed Boot Priority to boot from the USB drive to start the installation, but I continue to face the same error.
  2. Entered BIOS/UEFI and made the following adjustments:

• Disabled Secure Boot.

• Enabled AHCI mode.

• Checked Boot Mode and ensured UEFI was selected.

• Disabled Fast Boot to allow proper booting from the USB.

  1. Used Diskpart to clean the hard drive and delete partitions, ensuring there was unallocated space for the installation.
  2. Used Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) with tools like Startup Repair and Command Prompt, where I ran DISM /restorehealth and sfc /scannow to repair system files, but these did not fix the problem.
  3. Tried different USB ports, including USB 3.0, to rule out issues with the USB drive or port.
  4. Adjusted boot priorities and switched between UEFI USB and legacy boot options, but the error persists.

I really don’t want to go to windows 10 because my last computer couldn’t update to windows 11. I also don’t want to use Ethernet. Could you help me troubleshoot and resolve this error please?

    Hi Bryce Magallanes

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Happy New Year! 🎄 Wishing you a happy holiday season and a new year filled with peace, happiness and success! ✨

Based on your description, I understand that you are getting error 0x80070005 while installing Windows 11 on your new computer, and I understand very well how you feel!

You have tried a lot of troubleshooting steps and I commend you for your problem solving skills and mindset!

The 0x80070005 error encountered with Windows 11 is usually related to network connectivity issues or permission settings. At this stage, the system needs to be connected to the internet to complete some initial setup, but the installation process is blocked due to a failure to detect a network adapter.

But from what I can see in your picture, it seems that you are just stuck in the step of connecting to the network. So perhaps we can troubleshoot by skipping the OOBE first, and see if we can skip the OOBE to get into the system first, and then install the relevant drivers.

You may wonder why you need to skip the OOBE.

    1. OOBE is the initial setup screen after Windows installation, in which the user is asked to connect to the network in order to get updates and set up accounts, among other features. If the network adapter is not recognized correctly or the driver fails to load, it can lead to errors during the installation process.
    2. Skipping this step allows you to continue the installation of Windows 11 without the need to connect to the Internet immediately. Once the system installation is complete, you can reconfigure the network settings within the system.

Here is a step-by-step procedure that I have written to help you!

    1. On the “Let's connect your device to the network” screen.
    2. Press “Shift + F10” to open the command prompt.
    3. Type in the command and press Enter. OOBE\BYPASSNRO
    4. The system should automatically reboot and allow you to continue with the setup.
    5. At this point we are at the “Let's connect your device to the network” screen, you should see an option like “I don't have internet” or “Setup later”, click on it. This will allow you to skip this step.
    6. After successfully skipping OOBE, you can use your USB drive to install a driver for your network adapter or to connect to Wi-Fi through the Network option in Windows Settings after the system installation is complete.
    7. After rebooting to Windows, if the network adapter is still not recognized, please download the appropriate network drivers for your motherboard (available from the official MSI website) and install them manually after completing the installation.

Or you can make Windows installation media with some third-party tools (which will include Windows PE). At this time, the installation process will automatically recognize and install hardware drivers, which can also improve the convenience of our use.

I sincerely hope that the above solution will solve your problem. Please feel free to contact me (Photos related to the question would be great!).

I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Best Regards
