I have many files: PDF, Word, Excel, photos etc. It looks like Windows Explorer does not support adding tags to them. looks like MICROSOFT should do something about it.

    Hey,

I have been tagging my files for a while. My tags used to auto-complete, but now they don't. e.g 'Words' is one of my tags that I use often and it doesn't auto-complete anymore, I now have to type it in full every time.

Is there a reason for this?

    Thanks!

Yes, Windows Explorer doesn’t support tagging for most files like PDFs or Word docs.

We can add tags to some file types (like photos) through File Properties, but for others, it’s a bit limited. If you need more advanced tagging, you might want to look into third-party software that adds this feature.

Hopefully, Microsoft will improve this in future updates, but for now, that’s the workaround!

    Hello, scrts123

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

To add tags in Windows, find the file you want to tag, right-click on it, and select "Properties." In the properties window, go to the "Details" tab. Under the "Description" section, find "Tags," click the empty space next to it, and type in your tags, separating them with semicolons. Finally, click "OK" to save.

Images (like JPEG) and Office documents (like DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) usually support tags, but not all file types do. Here are some examples of file types that typically do not support tags:

    • PNG images: Unlike JPEG or JPG images, PNG files usually don't have the option to add tags.
    • PDF documents: While some PDFs might support tags, many do not show the tags option in the properties window.
    • ISO files: These disk image files also do not support tagging.

If you need to tag these unsupported file types, you might consider using third-party tools like File Meta Association Manager, which can enable tagging for more file types.

This issue might be caused by a recent Windows update. Some users have reported that after installing certain updates, the auto-complete feature for tags in File Explorer stops working: Windows 11 File Tags Autocomplete Not Working - Microsoft Q&A
