Hello Dennis,
Welcome to the Microsoft Community.
It seems that you're only getting a black screen on your camera preview, there can be several possible reasons for this problem. Here’s a checklist of troubleshooting steps you can follow:
- Check Camera Connection
- If you're using an external camera (USB webcam), ensure that it's properly connected to the computer.
- If it's a built-in laptop camera, make sure it's not physically blocked or covered.
- Restart Your Computer
- Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary issues with hardware and drivers.
- Check Camera Settings
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera and make sure camera access is allowed for apps.
- If you're using a specific app (Zoom, Teams, Skype, etc.), make sure the camera is enabled in the app settings.
- Update or Reinstall Camera Drivers
- Open Device Manager (press Windows + X and select Device Manager).
- Expand the Imaging Devices section, right-click on your camera, and choose Update driver.
- If updating the driver doesn’t work, try Uninstalling the camera (right-click and select Uninstall device), then restart your computer. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
- Alternatively, visit your camera or laptop manufacturer’s website for the latest drivers.
- Test in Different Apps
- Check if the issue happens across different apps (e.g., Skype, Zoom, Camera app, etc.). This can help determine if it's an app-specific issue or system-wide.
- Turn Off Other Apps Using the Camera
- Close any other apps that might be using the camera in the background, as they may conflict with the one you’re trying to use.
- Check for Conflicting Software
- Some antivirus or security software may block or interfere with the camera. Try temporarily disabling your antivirus and check if the camera works.
- Similarly, some third-party camera apps or software might be causing issues, so consider disabling or uninstalling them if installed.
- Run the Camera Troubleshooter
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Scroll down and select Camera and then click Run the troubleshooter.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to let Windows try and detect and fix the issue automatically.
- Check for Windows Updates
- Sometimes, a Windows update may address camera-related bugs.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then click Check for updates.
- Check for Conflicts with Other Hardware
- If you're using a docking station or have multiple USB devices connected, try disconnecting them and seeing if the camera works.
- Check App Permissions (if on Windows 10)
- If you're using an app like Skype, Zoom, etc., make sure that the app has permissions to access the camera.
- Open Settings > Privacy > Camera, and ensure the apps listed there have camera access turned on.
- Try Using a Different USB Port (for External Camera)
- If you're using an external webcam, plug it into a different USB port to rule out port issues.
If none of these steps work, there might be a hardware problem with your camera. If the camera is built-in, you may need to contact your device's manufacturer for further assistance or to explore repair options. If it’s an external camera, consider testing it on another computer to verify whether the issue lies with the camera or the original computer.
