Last night windows prompted me to update and shut down, now when I start my computer im stuck on the screen before boot up and prompted to enter bios or the boot menu. No buttons work and I cannot progress past this screen. The bios date and time is wrong and also stuck and I tried restarting three times to force system recovery but that does nothing either.

    Hello,

You will have to repair your computer's boot configuration using a Windows installation USB.

To do this, you will have to purchase a USB flash drive with at least 8GB of capacity. If you have another computer, download the Media Creation Tool (push here for Windows 10, and push here for Windows 11), and then run the exe once it downloads. If you get a UAC prompt, simply push Yes. Once the MCT comes up, insert your USB flash drive, choose your architecture, language, and time/currency format, make sure to push "USB Flash Drive", as this will move the files from the ISO to your flash drive. Let the MCT do its thing, and then eject the flash drive once it's done. On the non-functioning computer, boot from the USB flash drive, and then once the Windows Installer comes up, push "Repair this PC".

Then, once a screen asking you to choose an option comes up, choose "Troubleshoot" then "Advanced options" then "Command Prompt". If you are prompted for a BitLocker recovery key, you can find it at https://aka.ms/recoverykey. Once you enter your recovery key and you see the command prompt, type the following: bootrec /scanos && bootrec /fixboot && bootrec /rebuildbcd and push enter. After the commands complete successfully, please attach a picture of what you see.

Then, restart your computer and see if it boots to Windows.

If you don't have a second computer, ask a friend or family member.

Let me know how this goes.

This has been a chaotic troubleshooting process and at this point I'm not entirely sure this is even a Windows problem as it might be a problem with my motherboard or some other failure in my hardware.

I have somehow managed to boot to Windows after countless attempts, trying to use the windows 10 tool didn't seem to ever even function which is why I suspect this is a greater problem than simply Windows. I am now installing the tool for Windows 11 and going to see about getting a fresh install.

Additionally, I have just gotten a warning about my SSD that spare capacity is low and drive failure may be imminent, this is likely the culprit in this ordeal.

    Hello,

You can use the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool as well, and then you can follow the steps above as well.

    Hope this helps.

My PC has Windows 11 and the only others I have access to are older on Windows 10. I'm only able to run the tool for Windows 10, would that work to fix my PC or does it have to be the Windows 11 tool?
