Hello, Thant Zin Moe Lwin
Welcome to the Microsoft Community.
Hello, thank you for your feedback on your issue here, it seems that you are experiencing that the Fn+ function key shortcut is not working on your mechanical keyboard.
In order to troubleshoot whether your issue is with the hardware or the system itself, you can start by referring to the thread below to troubleshoot:
- Confirm the function key mode (F1-F12) is enabled or not
Many external mechanical keyboards, especially some with Fn keys, may have two modes of operation:
Media control mode (e.g., volume adjustment, play/pause, etc.).
Standard function key mode (e.g., F1 through F12).
On some keyboards, the function keys perform media control functions by default when the Fn key is pressed, and if you want to use the F1 through F12 functions, you need to hold down the Fn key while using the function keys. Some keyboards allow you to switch between these two modes, here are a few ways you can try:
Toggle function key mode:
Fn + Esc: This is usually a common combination to toggle the Fn key lock mode (Fn Lock).
Fn + Left Shift: Some keyboards toggle Fn mode with this combination.
Fn + Num Lock / Caps Lock: Try these combinations to see if you can switch to standard function key mode.
These actions will allow you to switch the F1 through F12 function keys to standard mode to prevent them from being mapped as media controls.
You can refer to the manual of your keyboard or consult the manufacturer directly for the specific function keys.
- Check Windows System Settings
In Windows systems, there are times when the keyboard shortcut behavior can be affected, here are a few checkpoints:
Update keyboard driver: Sometimes old versions of keyboard drivers can cause abnormal keystroke behavior. You can update the driver through the Device Manager:
Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
Find Keyboard, right-click on your keyboard device and select Update Driver.
Follow the prompts to update the driver.
Keyboard Settings: In the Control Panel or Settings, you can view and adjust the keyboard shortcut settings. Do the following:
Press Win + I to open Settings and select Time & Language -> Language -> Keyboard.
Make sure you have not enabled conflicting settings for keyboard shortcuts, especially media shortcuts.
Language and input settings:
In Settings, check to see if you have enabled hotkey mapping tools, which may remap or block your function keys.
- Try keyboard testing software
Use the Windows Keyboard Test Tool static third-party software to see and test whether each key is actually typed correctly or if there are mapping issues.
Windows keyboard diagnostic tool: Open Settings -> Devices -> Inputs and check if there are any hardware failures reported.
- Test other USB ports
Try to connect the VGN V87 Mechanical Keyboard to other USB ports on your computer, especially plugging it directly into the host USB port rather than through a USB hub, which can sometimes affect the keyboard's functionality.
- Update BIOS settings
In some cases, the shortcut settings in the BIOS setup may affect the behavior of the external keyboard. You can go to BIOS setup and check if there is any related function key or Fn key setting to make sure it is not disabled or modified.
- Reinstall the keyboard driver
If there is no improvement after driver update, you can try to uninstall and reinstall the keyboard driver:
Open Device Manager.
Locate your keyboard device, right-click and select Uninstall Device.
Restart your computer and Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.
Finally, you can connect your keyboard to other systems or devices to test if it functions properly. If it still doesn't work, it may be a hardware problem and you may need to contact the manufacturer for after-sales service.
