I use iTunes as primary backup method and my text messages are saved along with the other phone contents. However, I need help to extract and restore the entire backup file from iTunes to get saved messages back.

I tried Following from Gina Barrow, Last updated: January 14, 2023 but cannot find list of files and folders with long names.

Thanks in advance!

iTunes Version 12.13.4.4

But, if you are a bit techy and know a little about SQL editor then you can view your text messages from the iTunes backup file. Here’s how:

  1. Connect your iPhone to the computer using a USB cable
  2. Launch iTunes and click on your device icon on the iTunes screen
  3. From the Summary, choose This Computer and click Backup now
  4. Click the Apply button to start the backup process
  5. Now that you have created a backup of your iPhone via iTunes, go to Users/[username]AppDataRoaming. You will see a list of files and folders with long names or alphanumeric combinations.
  6. Find 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28.mddata and open your SQL Editor to view the text messages.

However, if you don’t have an SQL editor, you can just save the folder on your computer and just view them later on.

restore the entire backup file from iTunes to get your saved messages back.

Thanks Shawn, your suggestion works as far as the folder is concerned but no text file other than a log file asl.183212_13Nov24.log which is date of my iTunes backup with Computer option.

I asked Apple Community but no response for a week already.

I am surprised the post dated 2023 https://www.fonedog.com/ios-data-recovery/export-text-messages-from-iphone-free.html is wrong.

I used Powershell to find including hidden files

Get-ChildItem -Path "C:\Users\username" -Recurse -Force -Filter "*.mddata"

If you can help further, that will be greatly appreciated.

    Dear Sunny PA Wong

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

For the path of backing up iPhone in ITUNES in Windows,

you can refer to the information

    C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

Of course, for issues with iTunes, we recommend that you contact Apple support for further assistance.

    Best Wish
