thanks Nicholas. i have tried them all except the bios. going there now. accer website has no drivers for it, and the update situation is that i haven't used the touch for a year or so, and just now realized it doesn't work. i'll let you know the outcome of the bios attempt.

    Hi, john Lyons2

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

We understand that your touch screen HID device does not appear in the device manager. It may be due to the following reasons. You can try the corresponding solution.:    1.The device is hiddenThe touch screen device may have been hidden by Windows by mistake.Solution:Open the device Manager (Win + X → select Device Manager).Click View → Show hidden devices in the menu bar above to see if you can find HID touch screen devices (usually under “Human-machine interface devices”).If found, right-click → Enable device. 2.The driver is missing or not installed Windows may not automatically install the correct touch screen driver.Solution:In the device manager, find the universal serial bus controller (USB device) or other device and see if there is a device with a yellow exclamation mark.Right-click and select Update driver → Automatically search for updated drivers. If the automatic update is invalid, you can try to download the corresponding touch screen driver from the official website of the notebook or touch screen manufacturer and install it manually.3.BIOS/UFI touch screen settings are disabledThe touch screen function can be disabled in the BIOS/UFI settings of some notebooks or devices.Solution:Restart the computer and enter BIOS/UFI (usually F2, Del, or Esc entry).Find the Advanced or Peripherals option, check if there are Touch Screen-related settings, and make sure it is Enabled.Save and exit the BIOS.*Disclaimer: Microsoft does not provide any implied or other guarantees and/or guarantees, and is not responsible for the information or any technical-related support you obtain from third-party linked websites.**If you will still try to modify the BIOS settings, please back up important data first.*4.System update issuesSome Windows updates may cause HID devices to be lost, especially some versions of Windows 10/11.Solution:Try to roll back the driver:Device manager → Human-machine interface device → Right-click HID compatible touch screen (if present) → Properties → driver → select roll back driver.Try to roll back Windows updates:Settings → Update and Security → Windows Update → View update History → Uninstall recent updates.Install the latest Windows update and see if Microsoft has fixed the problem.5.Hardware failure or loose connectionThere may be a problem with the touch screen hardware, or the data cable may be loose.Solution:If it is a laptop, try to shut down, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, and then restart to see if it resumes. If it is an external touch screen, check whether the data cable (USB/DisplayPort) is firmly connected, or try another USB port.If the problem persists after you try to update the driver or roll back the update, it means that your touchpad hardware may be faulty. The best way is to contact the notebook manufacturer to test and repair your equipment.

    Best Regards
