Dear Jillakaangel
Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.
In Windows 11, when Device Manager shows PCI Encryption/Decryption Controller Missing Driver, it means that the system failed to automatically install the proper driver for it. This issue may affect the functionality of other external devices, such as external DVD RW drives. This guide will help you fix the missing PCI Encryption/Decryption Controller driver issue and check for potential problems related to external DVD RW drives.
Problem Analysis
1. PCI Encryption/Decryption Controller:
This is a device associated with the motherboard chipset and is usually supported by either the motherboard's driver (chipset driver) or Intel's RST (Rapid Storage Technology) driver.
Missing or corrupted drivers may affect the system's ability to correctly recognize other hardware such as external devices.
2. External DVD RW drive issues:
If the driver (CDROM.sys) for the DVD RW works fine, but the device does not recognize the CD-R, this may be related to the following reasons:
PCI encryption/decryption controller missing drivers and hardware compatibility issues.
USB port power management or kernel I/O issues.
The external DVD RW drive itself may be abnormal.
Method 1: Using the driver provided by the motherboard or OEM
1. Determine your computer's motherboard model:
If it is a desktop computer, go to the motherboard manual or the motherboard's official website and look for chipset-related drivers.
If it's a laptop, go to the manufacturer's official website (e.g. Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.) and download the driver according to the device model.
- Visit the motherboard or manufacturer's website:
Download the motherboard chipset driver (e.g. Intel Chipset Utility or AMD Chipset Driver).
If it is an Intel chipset, you may need to download the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver.
- After installing the driver, restart the computer and recheck the Device Manager.
Method 2:Checking the external DVD RW drive
After resolving the PCI encryption/decryption controller, the problem may still be associated with the DVD RW drive. Below are the troubleshooting steps:
Method 2.1: Update CDROM Driver
- Open Device Manager and locate the DVD/CD-ROM drive.
- Right-click on your DVD RW drive (usually lists the drive model number, e.g. extern_DVD_RW...) Select Update Driver.
- Choose to search for the driver automatically or specify the driver path manually.
- Make sure the system is using the latest cdrom.sys driver.
Method 2.2: Checking Drive Connectivity and Compatibility
- Try to change the connection port:
Plug the external DVD RW drive into a different USB port (if possible, use the USB 3.0/3.1 port).
- Check the USB power options:
Open Device Manager and expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
Locate the USB Root Hub listed, right-click and select Properties.
In the Power Management tab, uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to conserve power.
- Verify drive compatibility:
Make sure your external DVD drive supports the media you are trying to read (e.g. some models may not support CD-R).
