Win10 Desktop cannot see my FireTV stick as a Wireless Display, what can I do to fix this?

Both my Win10 Desktop and FireTV stick are on the same wifi and are less than 5ft apart.

I can:

  • use the "Win + k" to see the connect tab, but it never picks up the fireTV stick as a wireless display

-connect to my samsung smartTV with no problems

-connect to my fireTV stick as a wireless display with my win11 laptop (no issues)

I have tried:

-checked Miracast: Available, no HDCP

-used "netsh wlan show drivers" command in CMD to verify that wireless display is supported through graphics and wifi driver

-updating my wifi card driver

-updating my Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter driver

-disabling firewall completely

-scouring the microsoft fourms for similar issues

Please let me know if you have any advice, thank you in advance.

    Hello, Matt Fendt

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Hello, thank you for your feedback on this issue, it seems you are encountering

A situation where your computer cannot recognize your computer as a wireless display.

First of all thank you for sharing the information, it seems that win11 can be recognized but win10 computers can not connect, this situation is generally related to driver incompatibility. You can first make sure that the driver of the win10 computer is updated to the latest version, especially the wireless display driver and the graphics card driver and the Bluetooth driver. After this, refer to the steps below to ensure that the connection method etc is checked.

    1. Check the display Settings of the Fire TV Stick

Make sure your Fire TV Stick is set to allow screen mirroring:

On the Fire TV Stick, go to Settings.

Find Display & Sound > Enable Display mirroring.

Set it to on or mirror mode to make sure it is not set to disable.

    1. Make sure wireless display is enabled in Windows 10

Sometimes, even though Miracast is supported, it may not be enabled or recognized correctly. You can manually enable:

Go to Settings > System > Project to this computer.

Select available anywhere or available anywhere on a secure network.

Under Ask every Request projected to this computer, select Ask only the first time or Ask every connection request.

Make sure the wireless display is installed from the Microsoft Store:

Go to Settings > Apps > Optional Features.

Scroll down to see if the wireless display is listed. If not, click Add Feature and search for wireless display.

    Restart the system after installation.

    1. Check Miracast compatibility

Although you confirm that your system supports Miracast, sometimes there may be compatibility issues with specific graphics cards or drivers. You can confirm again by following these steps:

Press Win + R, type dxdiag, and press Enter.

Click Save All to save the text file to your desktop.

Open the file and look for Miracast: Available, with HDCP.

If HDCP is displayed or not available, your system may be completely incompatible with Miracast, or there may be a problem with your graphics card or Wi-Fi driver.

    1. Use the Windows 10 Connect app

Even if you've tried Win + K, the connecting app itself may provide more detailed error messages:

Open the Start menu, search for and open the connected app.

Check to see if your Fire TV Stick appears in the list.

If not, re-enable Miracast, restart both devices, and try the connection again.

    1. Check for conflicting programs or services

Sometimes background processes or security software may block the connection. Please ensure the following:

Temporarily disable third-party antivirus software or firewalls, even if you have disabled Windows Firewall.

Turn off other applications that may take up network resources (such as VPNS or high-bandwidth applications).

    1. Reset the Fire TV Stick

If nothing else works, you can try restoring the Fire TV Stick to factory Settings:

Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Restore factory Settings.

Then re-enable screen mirroring, as described in step 1. This clears Settings or configurations that may cause connection problems.

In addition, you can also refer to the following Amazon support forum shared some content that seems to be similar to your problem:

I want to cast from my PC to the Fire TV Stick connected to my Smart TV.

It is also recommended that you consult the TV manufacturer to see if your computer driver version is compatible with your TV for wireless projection.

Firstly, thank you for your reply, Bobhe.

I have since upgraded my desktop to win11 to attempt to solve the problem. My graphics card, bluetooth, wifi card and “microsoft wifi direct virtual adapter” have the up to date drivers. I can not find specifically the “wireless display driver” that you mentioned.

-Are there any windows 11 “wireless display drivers” you can recommend? How can I find them?

-Will it be specific to my CPU, motherboard, or wifi card?

    1. I put the fireTV in the “enable display mirroring mode” when I cast it with my win11 laptop - this works fine.
    2. I have changed the “project to this computer” settings including making it “available anywhere on a secure network” and “ask only the first time”. I have installed “wireless display” from “optional features”. After restarting my PC, the fireTV stick is still undetectable as a wireless display.
    3. I have done this step previously, my PC says, “Miracast: Available, no HDCP”. I have 2 questions regarding this:

-Is HDCP required to connect to a fireTV as a wireless display?

-Can I enable HDCP on my PC?

    1. I cannot find the windows 10 Connect app, is there an updated version for windows 11?
    2. I turned off my firewall and windows defender, restarted my PC with the above changes with no luck.
    3. I reset the fireTV stick to factory settings and tried again; it is still unable to be found.

Again, thank you for your help. I am also convinced this is a driver issue which is why I don’t believe it’s necessary to check the Amazon forums. I can connect absolutely fine on my windows 11 laptop.

Please let me know if you have any information regarding my questions highlighted in red above. Thank you.
