Screen Flickering, Freezing, and Crashing Without BSOD. How can i fix this?

Hello,

I’ve been experiencing a frustrating issue where my computer screen randomly starts flickering and freezing. When this happens, an annoying, dreadful sound plays (similar to the sound during a crash). The system doesn't show a BSOD—it just completely freezes, forcing me to do a hard reset.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  1. Updating Windows and all drivers.
  2. Running diagnostics to check for hardware issues.

Additionally, I’ve noticed that minidumps are not being created after these crashes, so for any info you need you can only refer the memory dump instead

Despite these steps, the problem persists. Could you assist in identifying the cause and provide a solution to prevent these crashes?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Thank you for your detailed update and response, which was very well organized!

It sounds like the problem persists despite trying multiple solutions, and I can understand your hesitation to make a non-destructive fix in this case. Let me address your concerns and suggest some alternatives.

    1. As a general rule, a non-activated copy of Windows will not affect the non-destructive repair process itself.

However, however, your customization options (e.g., personalization) may be limited and the repair will continue, but you may need to address the activation status later.

Forgetting your administrator account password may prevent some repairs from being performed. There are ways to reset the password, such as using a password reset disk or booting into Safe Mode and using a hidden administrator account (if available).

But as things stand now, and since you mentioned your parents are hesitant to do this, I think we can drop this option for now.

    1. Your laptop keeps disconnecting and reconnecting from the charger, which could indeed be a power-related issue. Since you have adjusted the processor state to reduce power consumption, this may help to alleviate the symptoms, but it still suggests that there may be a problem with the charging port or power circuitry.

    (1) If possible, try a different charging cable or adapter to see if the problem persists. If it's an old battery, it may also cause erratic behavior; replacing the battery will help stabilize the situation.

    (2) If you know a certain amount about hardware, you can check the laptop's internal components for loose connections (charging ports or power circuits) may help. However, this usually requires disassembling the laptop, which may not be ideal if you are unfamiliar with the hardware.

    1. I see the picture you provided, and this “splash screen” situation very much looks like a loose connection on the graphics card or some hardware failure. And with the Intel HD Graphics 3000, the graphics card is quite old and could be failing.

Considering this situation, I think you can take some of the following measures.

    (1) If you have an external monitor, try connecting your laptop to it. If it still flickers and freezes on the external monitor, there may be a problem with the motherboard or graphics processor.

    (2) Considering that there is no mini-dump of the dmp file, a more thorough diagnostic of the “Graphics Card, Memory” and “Hard Disk” can help to confirm if the problem is hardware related. You can use a tool such as “MemTest86” to perform a memory test, or check the health of the hard disk with the built-in diagnostic tool provided by the hard disk manufacturer.

    1. I strongly recommend attempting a clean boot to eliminate the possibility of third-party software or driver conflicts. This will help determine if background applications are interfering with the system.

Since you're using an Intel HD Graphics 3000, you may also want to roll back the driver to a previous version to see if that solves the problem. Sometimes newer drivers can cause problems with older hardware, and using an older, more stable version may help.

    1. Of course, performing a stress test can help us to further identify if there is a problem with the hardware, especially if there are frequent crashes and freezes.

There are a number of third-party tools that we can use to perform stress tests on the computer as a whole, as well as on individual pieces of hardware (especially CPUs and GPUs).

Due to community rules, I cannot provide you with specific third-party tools. You can check the information through Github, Reddit and other forums, and choose reliable and safe third-party tools.

Stress testing can help us better locate if there is a hardware failure. Especially for older laptops, memory, CPU and GPU are the most common sources of failure. If the stress test results are problematic, consider replacing the hardware in question.

Of course, I understand that replacing hardware requires a lot of money, so we can try to manually reduce the frequency of the hardware through some third-party tools, although it will lose some performance, but it can effectively improve the stability of the computer!

I sincerely hope that the above information will help you.

I wish you a wonderful day!

    Hello,

It was recommend that I try to update all my drivers before i move on. Some time ago, my laptop was upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. However, before the upgrade, the appropriate drivers for Windows 7 were not installed. I understand that many of these drivers can still be installed using compatibility mode on Windows 10.

One concern I have is regarding the BIOS update. The BIOS version currently on the laptop is still the one designed for Windows 7. I want to ensure that the BIOS is updated correctly to improve compatibility and stability with Windows 10. However, I’m hesitant to proceed, as I understand that an improper update can cause serious issues. Also to note I have never performed a bios update. Your colleague hasn't responded to me in a while so i came here seeking a response to this question

    Hi Billy,

That’s fantastic news! I'm glad to hear that running chkdsk fixed the problem and now your system is stable. It sounds like you've done a lot of work to make sure everything is running well, so it's great that your family was able to test it without any problems.

If there are any other questions, please feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to help. I can split your reply into a new thread when the time comes so the forum can keep better track of it.

Good luck with the remaining system tasks and I am always available if you need anything else in the future!

    All the best,

    Arthur
