Brand New Laptop - Set Up Purely As Work / Business Laptop

Hi there, I have just purchased a new laptop for use by a new employee within my business.

However, when I try to initially set up the laptop, straight out of the wrapper, it won’t let me input the new employee’s business email address to set the computer up.

This laptop will be used purely for business purposes, and so I wish to set it up from the get go as a business laptop using the new employee’s work details (email etc).

We have Microsoft Office for Business purchased - any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

If you don't have the "set up for work/school" option, I am confident you have Windows Home edition.

Any laptops/computers in the market now can run either Home or Pro editins. Does the store give you the itemized receipt you can review what you paid for?

You can either go back to the store, and specifically ask for a device that comes with Pro edition, or you can sign up for a free Microsoft account via https://account.live.com and use this account to finish the set up first. Then go to the Store app, search for Windows 11 pro and purchase the upgrade license and install Pro from there.

Once you have Pro installed, you can do the following:

Go to Settings > Accounts > Access Work or School, click on Connect.

Don't sign into your work email yet. Instead, click on "Join this device to Microsoft Entra ID". On the next step, you will be prompted to sign in, then you can sign in using the work email.

Once done, restart the computer and you can use "switch user" to sign in using the company email.

Brilliant, Emily. I will give this a go in the morning and feed back. If it doesn’t work, I’ll go back to the store and ask the question.

    Thank you again, very insightful.

Hi Emily, thanks for the response.

To be completely honest, I’m not sure. I went into the store and explained what I was looking for (in terms of a laptop purely for business purposes, needing a good battery life and processor etc) and was advised what was best.

It’s a Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge, if that helps.

    Thanks again

    Hello,

Any chance you purchased the laptop with Windows Home edition? If so, it will not support using organization email address to set up during OOBE process. It requires the Pro edition. If you have Pro, you can choose "setting up for work/school", then you can have the option to log in using work email.
