do you have a photo of the virus alerts? because it is most likely fake. I accidentally typed "yotube.com" and got a really weird website coming up claiming to be Microsoft, it had a bunch of error and virus messages on and there was even an AI voice, I also got the same thing where it talked about some trojan virus, it also said virus alert 02751 as well as telling me not to turn my computer off or restart it because the virus will spread.
There is a 90% chance it's fake. Microsoft wouldn't put popups saying "virus alert 02751" Also, telltale signs if a website or email is a scam, is:
- when the email isn't encrypted,
- spelling errors
- the website address is a bunch of numbers and figures, e.g. "123869abdoef.ce.store.com"
You should make sure you don't input any personal details into anything until you've gotten rid of the popups, the popups are most likely a virus in themselves, and they will probably give you a virus if you click on them. you need to install antivirus software.
Bitdefender offers either a free or paid service, you can get free or paid protection. It is way cheaper than others like MacAfee
The screenshot is of the website I landed on.
If someone or something ever asks you to call a number they've provided, don't, that number will be someone the scammer knows who's in on the scam and will pretend to be the person or company they are phishing.
If someone tells you to keep your computer on or bad things will happen, or something else like that, turn off your computer and call either your bank or the company you were supposedly talking to.
What you SHOULDN'T do:
Give away personal details, such as date of birth, age, bank details, logins, address, where you go to school (if applicable) tell them you're home alone, marital status, job role (if applicable)
Call the number they provided
click links they provide.
What you SHOULD do:
You should call Microsoft or whoever the company is directly on the official website to confirm.
Never click on any links, enter personal details, or save info to websites you don't trust, and DON'T part with money. Scammers will always ask you to part with money and can be very manipulative.
Messages or popups saying "you need to pay" or something that tells you to give money is a scam as companies will NEVER ask you to part with money over popups or the phone.
Transactions will almost always be done through the company's official website and with a trusted digital payment platform or bank.
Popups that say "We've found x amount of viruses on your computer, click this link to get rid of it" are most definitely a scam, especially if they've said you have over 1,000 viruses or something.
if you're concerned you might have viruses then either download a trusted antivirus platform (look for the HTTPS at the top and whether it's encrypted or not, they can still be fake even if they're encrypted so make sure to check the website) or open your antivirus software if you already have it and see if it has detected any viruses. You can also use the built-in Windows antivirus checker if you have Windows.
Also, ensure that any extensions you have on Google or another search engine don't contain malware, only download the official AdBlock. I installed an AdBlocker from the website and later found out it had malware in it, while it may have done a stellar job at blocking ads, it contained malware.
One more thing, NEVER download apps from websites that aren't trusted, if an app isn't compatible with your device then it's best not to download it.
I digressed a little but I hope this educated you a little more, scams are becoming much harder to spot, with the increase of new technology and AI etc.
Do your popups look anything like this?
popups are usually scams or companies that've cookies on your device and want you to buy their product.
Make sure you don't click on them, and if you do, don't enter personal or bank details and don't give anyone remote access to your device.
If you are able to send me a screenshot of your screen (w/out any personal info) then I can try and help.
