Questions About Windhawk App: Legitimacy, Safety, and Antivirus Detection

Hi,

I have a few questions about an app called Windhawk (https://windhawk.net), which is designed for modding and customizing Windows applications.

  1. Is this app legitimate, and could using it result in any issues like being banned or causing instability in Windows?
  2. Is the app safe to use? I’m cautious about running third-party software that modifies the OS.
  3. I scanned the file on VirusTotal, and while most engines didn’t flag it, VBA32 detected it as "Suspected Of Trojan.Downloader.gen". Could this be a false positive? How should I proceed?

I’d appreciate a quick response as I’m eager to try the app but want to ensure everything is safe and compliant.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hello ItzG, I'm Quinn, and I'm glad to help.

    1. Windhawk is created by the same developer behind the popular 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, a reputable tool for customizing the Windows taskbar. While Windhawk itself seems legitimate, the website and reviews from reliable sources can provide additional confirmation. However, using such third-party software can sometimes lead to instability in Windows or potential conflicts with other applications. It's always a good idea to back up your system before installing and using such tools.
    2. Windhawk has no widespread reports of malware or security issues. However, being cautious with third-party tools is always a good practice. As a precaution, try to run the application in a sandbox or virtual machine initially, or use it on a non-critical system to know its behavior before fully deploying it on your main system.
    3. Out of 69 antivirus engines, only VBA32 flagged the file as "Suspected Of Trojan.Downloader.gen." This is likely a false positive, as no other major antivirus tools flagged the file.

I recommend creating a system restore point or backing up your important data before using Windhawk. Additionally, try running the app in a controlled environment (like a virtual machine) before applying it to your main machine. Feel free to let me know if you need further assistance.
