Windows 11 PC is not recognizing any microphone input

I have a PC with an Intel i7-8700 CPU, which I recently updated to Windows 11 Pro. Prior to this update and now, I have been unable to get the PC to recognize any sound input from external devices. These are the hardware setups I have tried:

  • Headset -> split aux cable for headphones and microphone -> headphone and microphone jacks on the front and back of my PC
  • Headset -> split aux cable -> USB adapter with aux jacks for headphone and microphone -> USB ports on PC

On the software side, I have attempted the following:

  • Checking that microphone volume is sufficiently high in Sound Settings
  • Setting app permissions to access microphone
  • Updating all relevant drivers (for all input and output devices, and USB)
  • Changing the Format to different channel, bit, and Hz settings I saw recommended in different posts
  • Disabling 'exclusive mode' in the Control Panel

I also attempted the following on Windows 10 prior to updating, and was unable to get any input sound recognition through headset microphones. The built-in Troubleshooter does not say there is any issue, and when I go to test the microphone in System -> Sound -> Properties, it always says 'Result: 0% of total volume'.

I am unsure what else to try, and if it might be a physical issue with plugs within my PC, and would welcome any additional suggestions to get microphones to work with my PC. Notably, I am always successful in getting sound output through my headsets, so this appears to solely be an input issue.

    Son of B**ch Microsoft,

    Your latest audio driver update has completely removed support for microphone input via the standard 3.5mm audio jack. This is not just a minor inconvenience — it’s a critical failure for users who rely on that functionality for work, meetings, and communication.

    This jack has been a universal standard for years, and suddenly it's just gone? Without warning? Without an alternative? This is beyond frustrating, and it’s costing people time, energy, and productivity.

    Now its more clear, why peoples are shifting to MAC OS (Apple devices). Microsoft really sucks

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

    It's good to know that the older USB headset works, which suggests that the issue may indeed be with the aux-to-USB adapter or how the new headset's microphone is being recognized by Windows.

    AUX (meaning "auxiliary input") is widely used in audio and video equipment, usually used to connect audio devices to transmit audio signals.

    In your case, when you connect the headset to the computer using an AUX to USB adapter, you are actually passing the audio signal from the headset to the adapter through the AUX interface, and then to the computer through the USB interface. However, as you encountered, although the audio output of the headset is normal (that is, the sound of the headset can be heard through the computer), the microphone input is not recognized. This may be due to a compatibility problem with your adapter itself, or the signal between the interface and the device is not properly transmitted.

    Hi Ezra,

    Thank you for your quick reply. I've gone through your steps and am unfortunately still unable to get microphone input from my headset. I tried with an older headset that ends in a USB, and that one picked up mic input immediately. It's odd that even though I'm using an aux -> USB adapter, that my new headset's input is still not being recognized.

    I appreciate your help, and will keep trying to find a solution!

    Hello David,

    I cannot currently examine your computer, But I have a few recommendations.

    1. Examine your ports. Check for any build up of dust, or anything else. If you do find that your ports are dirty, take a Cotton Swab and break it in half. Then but rubbing alcohol on the broken end, and clean out your port.
    2. It may be something internally. I Understand that you updated your drivers, but maybe it is happening because of a different driver. Your Drivers are located in the "Device Manager" Application on your computer. Your Computer has a driver category called "Audio Inputs and outputs" Click on this. You will then see two main drivers. If you have not updated them, do so now. You may now close out of that category, and go to a different one, called "Sound, Video Games And Controllers" You should see inside this category, a driver called "_______ Display Audio". Even though this does not relate to the external ports, where you are having issues with audio, I would recommend updating the driver to be safe for the future to come. Then you can close out of that driver category. Now, Open up the category titled "USB Connector Managers" And Update the "UCM-UCSI ACPI Device" Driver.
    3. If the issue persists, restart and shut down the computer. Let the computer sit for a while.

    Thank you for your time and response as well, Hahn! I think I've exhausted all options with the USB adapter, and still am not sure why the sound input isn't working when plugging the split auxiliary cable in audio input and output jacks on both the front and back of the PC. I may simply opt for finding a new USB headset, though would always prefer to find a solution if possible, if nothing else then for learning what the core problem is!
