Hello everyone

For some time now we have been having the problem that PDFs can no longer be saved directly to a file server. As soon as you click on the save button or press ctrl+s, the following message appears "The document cannot be saved. The file may be read-only or another user may have it open. Please save the document under a different name or in a different folder". This problem occurs with all PDF tools such as Adobe Acrobat, Foxit and Kofax. What could be the problem?

    Hi Kirito

The problem occurs with more than one file on more than one computer.

They are pdfs from our customer on a windows file server.

I didn't create the pdfs but I know they come from different sources like scan, mail, erp software etc.

    Thanks for your help.

    Kind regards

    Lars

    Thank you for your reply.

    If your tests don't work

I would have to consider the PDF itself.

I would like to know if the problem occurs on other computers with this file?

Meanwhile, I would like to confirm, how did you get this pdf?

Did you create it through yourself, or did someone else upload it to you?

Knowing these details, I'll see if there are any clues that can help you

    Looking forward to your reply

    Hi Kirito

    Thank you for your reply.

I've tried everything you've written before. Nothing seems to work. Here's a list of what I've already tried:

-Folder permissions checked = write permissions available.

    -Change PDF permissions

    -Deactivate inheritance

-Copied to local folder = saving works like this

-PDfs copied to another path and copied back

-Txt created and renamed to .pdf

    -Tested with Testuser

-PDfs copied to other path and copied back

-Copied to another drive and tested there.

    -Checked settings in Adobe Acrobat.

    -Defender checked = deactivated

    -Shorter path used

The problem has not yet been solved.

    -Comparison with another employee.

    Best regards

    Lars

Hello Lars Aeschbacher and welcome to the Microsoft Community

According to your feedback, you are experiencing saving a pdf with the message “Unable to save document. The file may be read-only or another user may have opened it. Please save the document under a different name or in a different folder”.

There are many reasons for this problem, you need to troubleshoot, you can test the following methods

    1. Close the preview:

If you are in the local PDF changes or editing the appearance of this error message then

then this problem may be due to the preview of the Explorer led to the

Previously by the user feedback through this method to solve the problem, you can try it!

Go to Explorer > At the top of the File Explorer window, click on the “View” tab > On the right side of the “View” tab, find the “Preview Pane” option and click to Uncheck the box, this will disable the file preview function, then you see if you can solve the problem.

    1. Check the file permissions:

Make sure you have permission to modify and save the PDF file.

If the file is read-only, you need to change the file permissions to save the changes!

    method:

     1. Check the file properties:

Right-click on the PDF file and select “Properties”.

In the General tab, make sure the Read Only property is unchecked. If it is checked, uncheck it and click “Apply”.

     2. Change folder permissions:

Right-click on the folder containing the PDF file and select “Properties”.

Go to the “Security” tab and click the “Edit” button.

Select your user account and then make sure that the “Full Control” permission is allowed. Click “Apply” and “OK”.

Or some PDF is encrypted by the password file, you need to cancel the encryption first.

        Use the PDF Editor:

         Open the PDF file.

If the file is password protected, you will need to enter the password to unprotect it.

In Adobe Acrobat, click on the File menu and select Properties.

Go to the Security tab and select No Security or change the permission settings.

         Save the changes.

    1. Save as a new file:

If the original file cannot be saved, try saving the changes as a new PDF file.

This can usually be achieved through the “Save As” function, you can directly select Save As to save to another path to try!

    1. Check for file corruption:

If the PDF file itself is corrupted, you may not be able to save the changes.

Try to use PDF repair tools to repair the file, and then save!

Or you can try again to change the PDF format to word format, and then change back to pdf format is a bit.

We look forward to hearing from you.
