My Mouse stopped working after Latest Windows 10 Update

My laptop is running Windows 10 and yesterday I installed the latest updates. Today when I started my laptop, I found that my mouse was no longer working. The USB ports are fine since I tried inserting different thumb drives. I also changed my mouse to see if there was something with the old one but my wireless mouse is still not working.

What could be the reason behind my mouse suddenly not working?

Mouse problems are a frequent recurrence with Windows updates. When it happens, I can't mark text consistently, the mouse 'misfires', i.e., fires a second time immediately after I click and sometimes without even a first click -- sometimes at a position that is semi-disastrous. If I highlight a web address, it 'fires' and sends me to that address whether I want to go there or not. It loses focus quickly. Putting these all together, it can be absolutely maddening if I'm trying to get something done in a hurry.

I have experienced these for years, now. Sometimes the next update makes it go away, sometimes not. It feels like there is some code and/or mismatch that is sneaking back into the production stream.

FWIW, I have always attributed this to interaction with some software that is installed on my computer, maybe VirtualBox (not to cast aspersions, but VirtualBox also interacts with the mouse and so is suspect). I've not been able to prove it yet. I just wanted to share this here for anyone who may be thinking similarly.

No, the touchpad is working. I haven't tried using a wired mouse either because I have always used a wireless mouse and don't own a wired mouse.

My current laptop is Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Windows 10.

After the latest update on 14th October, I found that the next day my wireless mouse was not working. I tried another wireless mouse and that too isn't working. I've tried all the options listed above but none of them have worked.

After Reset, I've noticed my laptop is a little slower than it was before.

    Palvi,

Resetting Windows should generally make your PC faster by removing all third-party applications, leaving only Microsoft services and drivers running. It’s unfortunate that after the system reset, your PC has become slower and the touchpad is still not working.

    • May I please know some details about your device?

Type msinfo in the search bar on the taskbar and click enter.

    Post the screenshot.

    Best regards,

    Gunasekar N

    Hello Palvi,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community and I'll be glad to assist you today.

If I understand correctly, you've tried connecting both a USB-wired mouse and a wireless mouse to the laptop, but neither device is being detected. Is that right?

Let's run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter to diagnose the issue. Here’s how you can do it:

    a. Click Windows + R key, type the command below and click enter.

    msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic

    b. Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.

    c. Once completed, restart your computer and test it.'

If you are still experiencing issues, re-install the mice drivers.

    1. Open the Device Manager.
    2. Expand the arrow next to 'Mice and other pointing devices'.
    3. Right-click on each mouse driver in the Device Manager and uninstall all of them from the list.
    4. Restart your computer and plug in your wired mouse to test if it works.

Let us know how it goes.

    Best regards,

    Gunasekar N
