over the years systems gather lots of clutter. Are there tools for cleaning up your system like in the good old days when operating systems worked well? I am running windows 10

    Hi starbassfishing,

I'm and Independent Advisor and I'm happy to help you.

It is not safe to use third-party tools that modify the registry or delete sensitive folders as they might break your system, but I can give you some personal performance recommendations.

    For cleanup, you can:

    • Use the built-in tool by doing "Windows + R" and typing "cleanmgr".
    • Use the Storage Sense feature built in Windows by going to Settings > System > Storage.
    • Manually remove (caution!) folders that you are confident you dont need at these locations:

    C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Local

    C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming

    C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\LocalLow

    C:\ProgramData

Even in Program Files folder could be uninstalled programs lefover folders.

    • Also, check in Task Manager the section "Startup" and deactivate unnecesary startups.

If you want to remove programs you don't use, always do so by uninstalling from Control Panel, so the uninstaller can clean everything related.

There's actually no additional locations in which leftover files are stored, so you can clean it pretty completely. As for the registry, leftovers do not affect your PC performance and take almost no space, so it is smart to leave it as-is.

Please, let me know if this helps!!

Windows 10 is not the old days, and today systems don't need to be cleaned. This idea was actually debunked years ago, but it refuses to die. So-called system optimization tools cause more problems than they solve and you should avoid them.

P.S: Forgot to mention that Microsoft is developing a new cleanup tool that will be available in the future, in case you want to check it out. :)

    Hello,

You can use Disk Cleanup (type cleanmgr in the Start Menu), and Defragment and Optimize drives which will trim your drive to make it run better.

I wouldn't use any registry cleanup tools like CCleaner because they have adware and spyware.

However, if you don't mind, you can also backup your system and do a clean install of Windows from scratch, which will certainly make things run faster.

    Hope this helps.
