Why is my Microsoft Windows not responding when I play Rust?

Everytime I play a game called "Rust", my game freezes then an error pops up "Microsoft Windows not responding...". I'll try and open task manager but it is unresponsive too. Eventually my screen turns gray and my pc restarts itself.

The first few times this happened, I'll play rust for maybe 10 minutes then the game freezes, the error popping up was "Windows Explorer not responding...". Again, I'll try to end Rust process via task manager but it wont open up. I'll try to open google chrome, or anything on my task bar and its unresponsive. To fix the issue quickly, i would force restart my pc by physically pressing on the restart button on my tower.

Please help me fix this issue, I've never had problems running Rust until recent and its my favorite game to play. I tried rinstalling Rust and the issue persists. It does not happen when playing another game like Valorant.

Just wanna respond to this. Windows has **** every easy anti cheat game. The new H24 update has caused incompatibility with so many games!

I found one fix which was to delete the easy anti cheat system file which worked for a day and now no longer works. I need to cut the power to my pc. My entire pc locks down and can’t even restart or run task manager. I have very good graphics and parts. All my drivers are updated and I use a third party software to check. Whatever new update that was rolled out **** everything I cannot play any of my games because of this. There’s tens of THOUSANDS of people with the same issue and nothing is being done.

No one can find a fix and I’m tired trying to play video games only to harm my pc by cutting the power to it.

I am having close to the same problem, while playing rust sometimes it will be fine and let me play for a random amount of time until my steam will disconnect from the internet and my windows will freeze after that. i can still do stuff on my computer like talk to friends in discord, but if I try to do anything with task manager my windows will freeze and i will have to force shut down my computer. Very frustrating to deal with. It was working for a day or two on and off, but today i struggled with playing at all. I have been in contact with cyberpower (who I got my pc from) and they have been trying to help but nothing they have told me to do has helped.GL Friend. lmk if you figure anything out!

Hello, I'm having the exact same problem. Windows forced me to install the latest update, and now, when I'm playing, it randomly disconnects me from Steam. Additionally, Windows starts freezing when I shut down the game or open Task Manager. If you have found any solutions I would love to hear from you. Thank you

    Hello, Alexandre Lima-Karim

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

Thank you for your feedback. Based on your hardware configuration and specific symptoms, the problem could be in multiple areas. Here are some troubleshooting options:

    1. Driver issues

Rust is a very graphically demanding game, and outdated or unstable graphics drivers may cause your computer to freeze and restart.

Update Graphics Driver: Make sure your NVIDIA graphics driver is up-to-date, you can visit the official NVIDIA website to download the latest driver.

Update Chipset Driver: Visit ASUS official website to download and update the chipset driver for your motherboard.

    1. Temperature and Hardware Monitoring

Your computer may overheat while running Rust, causing system instability.

Check CPU and GPU temperature: You can download and use monitoring software (e.g. HWMonitor, MSI Afterburner, etc.) to check the temperature when running Rust. If the temperature is too high, consider cleaning the heatsink and reapplying heat-conductive silicone grease, or check if the fan is working properly.

    1. Game and Software Conflicts

Certain background programs or software conflicts may cause the game to crash.

Clean boot: Hold down Win + R to open the Run dialog box, type msconfig and enter. Enter the “System Configuration” window, check “Hide all Microsoft services” in the “Services” tab, and then click “Disable all”. Disable”. Next, go to the “Startup” tab, open Task Manager and disable all startup items. Try running Rust again after restarting your computer to see if the problem is resolved.

Disclaimer: Clean boot is a process of starting Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine if background programs are interfering with your games or programs and to help you figure out the cause of the problem. “The steps of Clean Boot may seem complicated at first glance, but to avoid any trouble, follow them in order, step by step, and it will help you get back on track.

    1. Memory issues

Memory issues can be another potential cause.

Run the Memory Diagnostic Tool: Press Win + R, type in mdsched.exe and enter, select “Restart now and check for problems”.

    1. Check the disk

Disk problems can also cause system instability.

Use the chkdsk utility to check the disk: open a command prompt (with administrator privileges), type the following command and enter:

    chkdsk /f /r

Disclaimer: Run chkdsk to check the file system and file system metadata of a volume for logical errors and physical errors. To avoid causing unnecessary trouble, please follow the above steps step by step and do not interrupt or cancel during the run, and make a backup of important data.

If the problem persists, it is recommended to document all attempted steps and error messages and seek help from a professional hardware technician or contact Rust official support for further diagnosis and resolution.

I look forward to your feedback.

    Best Regards,

    Aaron| Microsoft Community Support Specialist
