Lenovo T490 display flicker plus static

I have had nothing but trouble with this Lenovo Thinkpad display. Usually I can manipulate my way out of this but right now I am stuck in this state and everything I have tried is either nothing or only slightly better.

Specs:

Lenovo T490

Intel 8th Gen CORE i5-8365U CPU @ 1.60GHz 1.9 GHz

Windows 11 Pro

version 22H2

OS Build 22621.4317

What is happening?

sometimes the display works just fine and I can even go days without anything happening.

Sometimes, usually opening the lid, I get a screen of static similar to a tv with no signal

Sometimes I get partial "static" and massive flickering

Sometimes the "static" is opaque and partial along with flickering- CURRENT STATE

How I usually fix it?

hard power off/on

Solutions I have taken:

I have updated the graphics card several times this year including this morning with a clean install

changed display rate from 48 to 60 Hz and back again and right now it is at 60 and better but still not fixed

restarted many times

played with the lid angle and everything is the same

played with every single display setting I could find

I have no apps installed except one software but it occurred before this

I have removed most of the pre-installed junk including AI and games

EDIT: I want to add that upon updating the graphics card, it was better but still not fixed

Windows updates I am not sure are the problem but this may have been occurring before I received this used laptop a year ago since it was sporadic and it occurred after a few times of opening it up, so to trace it to an update is hard. However, I see many many people have issues with Lenovo and so I do not think it is from anything but their poor product.

OK so I had updated the driver earlier and while it was better, it was still there, despite a restart. I saw a support topic here about task manager and seeing if this app was flickering just like the rest of the screen. This was interesting because it was NOT flickering on the task manager itself but was on the GUI menu portions of the app. The start menu was the most flickering of anything on my screen as well, which is most interesting.

From this observation, I would say Windows itself has some issue.

I had to go eat lunch and so I closed the laptop and it went to sleep. 2 hours later I saw Jan's reply and I opened this laptop up and the flickering went away. I presume that it will still be there in the near future and I will need to do this once again, so if anyone has any more ideas on how to handle the issue, please feel free to add more. My laptop says it has reached the end of service so I only get the minimum updates I guess...

Hi, my name is Jan and I am glad to help you today. I am sorry that you are having this problem with your screen. There are many possible reasons why your laptop screen is flickering, such as driver and hardware-related issues.

    1. Turn your computer off and on again.

Press the power button for 10 seconds to shut down.

Then unplug the AC adapter for 30 seconds.

    Then plug in the adapter.

    Then start your device.

    1. Try rolling back the graphics drivers.

Press the Windows key + X

    to select Device Manager.

    Expand the display adapter

Right-click on the graphics driver and then select Properties

    On the Driver tab

    Select the rollback driver

    Then restart your laptop.

If the laptop has both integrated and dedicated graphics drivers, try rolling back both graphics drivers. Rolling back the graphics drivers may help resolve instability issues caused by the latest driver updates.

    1. Try using a laptop cooling pad or a stand. Clean the laptop's air vents.
    2. However, if the clean installation of the graphics driver did not resolve the problem. this could be related to a hardware problem. In most cases, a damaged display cable, or faulty display is causing this problem on a laptop. Try contacting the Manufacturer or a professional computer repair service to diagnose the cause of the display problem.
