How To Fix File In Use Shell Infrastructure Host Error?

So recently, Microsoft Windows updated and my laptop has been giving this error suddenly.

At first, I thought it was only an issue on my laptop, but many people are having this issue, leaving me to believe it was the recent updates
If Microsoft could fix it, that would be greatly appreciated. None of the tutorials or help I'm finding online works which makes sense since the issue isn't on my end but the update.

Ah, thank you for your response! However, there are a few issues to note before I use this tool. It's not only one file or folder that shows this error, it's ANY file I open and then try to rename/delete. I work with multiple files at once, so a temporary fix for a single file won't help me much, sadly. It's not a single instance issue, it's an ongoing issue across all files.

    Hi,

I'm Sumit, here to answer your query at the Microsoft Community.

Apologies for any inconvenience you are experiencing. I am happy to help you today.

Let us solve this. Powertoys would help you identify the process and terminate it. It might be a Windows Process; more on that later.

To use the File Locksmith feature in Microsoft PowerToys and end the process using it, follow these steps:

    Install PowerToys:

Download and install Microsoft PowerToys from the official GitHub page or via the Microsoft Store.

    https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/xp89dcgq3k6vld

Ensure you have version 0.64.0 or later, as File Locksmith was introduced in this version.

    Enable File Locksmith:

    Open the PowerToys application.

Navigate to the "File Locksmith" section in the settings.

Toggle the "Enable File Locksmith" option to turn it on.

    Use File Locksmith:

Open File Explorer and locate the file or folder you want to investigate.

Right-click on the file or folder.

Select "What's using this file?" from the context menu (you may need to click "Show more options" in Windows 11).

A File Locksmith window will open, displaying a list of processes using the selected file or folder.

    End Processes:

In the File Locksmith window, identify the process locking the file.

Click "End Task" next to the process to terminate it. You can also view additional details like Process ID and User by expanding the information.

    Restart as Administrator (Optional):

If some processes are not visible, click "Restart as administrator" in the File Locksmith window. This will allow you to scan all processes, including those running under other user accounts.

    Finish and Close:

After ending tasks as needed, close the File Locksmith window.

If required, refresh your system or retry your intended action (e.g., deleting or modifying the file).

I look forward to your response and am eager to collaborate until we find a solution.

It is easy to delete files like these,

    1. Open task manager
    2. Find Shell Infrastructure Host
    3. Restart the task

    | This causes a restart for the Shell Infrastructure Host, which is a core windows background process. Causing all files under it to

    | be " homeless ". (some crashes are expected in the restarting process)

    1. After the restart, delete the chosen file.

Therefore, your file has been deleted off the file explorer.

Can you launch the Windows "Task Manager", select "Shell Infrastructure Host", and right-mouse-button "click" on the name of that app, and choose "End Task" ? After doing so, can you access your "multiple files" ?
