Fortnite freezes whole PC (have to hold the power button)

Hello,

I've asked about this on fortnite support but they just gave me generic copy paste troubleshooting script and then sent me here to ask.

So, in the last few weeks maybe 2 months, when I would be in Fortnite it would randomly stutter or freeze for a second, but that isn't anything surprising about that game. But in the recent few weeks, the game would just freeze for either 10 seconds and continue normally OR it would stay frozen and my whole PC would be frozen as well. I could hear audio from discord or audio from browser but I couldnt alt tab, couldnt ctrl alt del OR anything else, occasionally it would break even the audio, sometimes it would stay frozen with audio and others could even hear me while its all frozen. But sometimes I would get an error message saying "Microsoft Windows stopped responding"... I've never had this issue with any game or any PC before, I've tried everything that can be done.

Thank you for your time.

I was deep deep in reddit and possibly found a solution. I haven't tested it myself yet but going to test it tomorrow.

    Quote from reddit:
"1. Disable Discord overlay and messaging notifications"
"2. Close Riot Vanguard (You have to restart pc to play league again"

Found many people that play Valorant/League like myself that the Riot anticheat system "Vanguard" is the most obvious root cause for this Fortnite/Windows freeze that is happening to me and you, and many others.

Also the discord thing might also be true, because some are reporting that closing/quitting discord entirely before launching or playing Fortnite is also making the game playable and not freeze. And the discord notifications can interrupt with the game if you have notifications on.

I can link the reddit thread here also. Its full of like minded individuals with similar problems.

And its interesting how we both have same issues in the past weeks, its almost like its caused by windows or fortnite update *shrug*...
I've just tested 3 year old graphics driver just to make sure its not that. And tested running the game without Safe boot and tpm. The freezing was still happening.. So I really dont know

Hi, thanks for the detailed information, as per checking and analyzing the event files you have, there are general errors on the event files, moreover kindly follow the steps below for us to fix the issue:

    Method 1. Do clean boot:

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.
    • On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.
    • Close Task Manager.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.

If none will work from the above solution, I suggest doing an in-place upgrade wherein it will upgrade the device to the latest version and repair all issues without deleting any files.

Note: before doing this make sure to create a restore point: https://support.microsoft.com/en-hk/help/402753...

    4. On the What do you want to do? page, select Upgrade this PC now, and then select Next.
    5. After downloading and installing, it should fix the issue.
