I was able to resolve this on several dell laptops by doing a power cycle reset. This is a pretty common way to reset both desktops and laptops, so it should work for all machines from all manufacturers. Note that this also fixed a post-upgrade issue on a Dell Latitude 5520 laptop where the CPU was throttled at 10%, severely impacting performance.

    1. Shutdown the laptop while on battery power and wait about 10 seconds after the shutdown.
    2. Hold down the power button on the laptop for about 40 seconds, then release the power button.
    3. Finally, plug the power back in and quickly press the power button again to boot the laptop.
    4. Sign in normally and see if the fans quiet down after a few minutes.

For a desktop PC, you should probably hold down the power button while the machine is on - which forces an abrupt power off. Just keep the power button depressed after the machine cuts off for the full 40 seconds.

We are also experiencing the exact same issue in our company environment.

Despite extensive testing, support tickets, and internal analysis, this fan issue during email composition in Outlook Classic with Exchange remains unresolved.

It’s very frustrating that such a basic task – simply typing an email – leads to immediate fan activation, even though CPU usage is low (~3–5%) and no heavy processing is involved.

We have tested this across multiple devices, including:

    • HP EliteBook 840/1040 G9
    • Surface Pro 9 / Laptop 5
    • Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Gen 9+

All running Windows 11 with Modern Standby (S0), no S3 support available.

    We have already tried:

    • Resetting and customizing power plans (including High Performance and Balanced modes)
    • Testing custom .pow files (e.g., “Outlook_Ruhig”)
    • Verifying Modern Standby status via powercfg /a
    • Checking registry for CsEnabled (not present)
    • Full Outlook resets (profile, registry, add-ins, signatures)
    • Comparing with New Outlook (quieter but limited) and Outlook Web (not viable for enterprise)

We’ve even escalated the issue through Microsoft support channels — but were told it’s outside their support boundary and not actively being addressed at product level.

From our perspective, this is a serious design-level problem

    • The forced use of WordEditor.exe in Outlook Classic
    • Automatic Exchange draft saving that can’t be disabled
    • The sensitivity of Modern Standby (S0) to background activity

    We believe Microsoft must:

    • Escalate this to the Outlook product team
    • Offer options like autosave control, a lightweight editor, or a Silent Compose Mode
    • Clarify how Office is meant to perform on S0-only systems

Unfortunately it didn't work and there is no problem with the hardware.

Did you recently installed the Windows 11?

    Have you installed all updates?

In case it is a laptop PC, does it happen when you connect to power adaptor or battery or both?
