Mysterious Realtek Bluetooth Adapter not working (Code 31)

I'm getting a mysterious Bluetooth adapter not working in my Device Manager, it shows up under Bluetooth category. It's mysterious because I have no idea where it's coming from, everything seems to be working otherwise. I've tried to update the driver, it says it's already the most current driver. I've tried to uninstall the driver, and it just comes back with the same same driver issue again.

Realtek has a lot of products, so is there any way to find out which specific Realtek Bluetooth product is causing the issue?

Hi BlackJacques, hope you're doing well. I'm Ian, and I'm happy to help you today.

To identity the Bluetooth product, you can check the Hardware ID in Device Manager.

  1. Right-click the Start button then select Device Manager.
  2. Find the Bluetooth Adapter with the exclamation mark or Code 31 error under Bluetooth.
  3. Right-click the device, select Properties then click on Details tab.
  4. Select “Hardware Ids” from the Property dropdown.
  5. Copy the Hardware/Device ID Value, and search it online to identify the exact product.

I hope this helps, but please let me know if you need anything else.

Hi BlackJacques, I’m Eric, and I’d be happy to help!

Since your Realtek Bluetooth adapter is showing Code 31 (“This device is not working properly”), it’s likely a driver conflict or a ghost device from a previous installation. To identify the exact Realtek product, open Device Manager, right-click the Realtek Bluetooth adapter, and select Properties > Details tab. In the Property dropdown, choose Hardware IDs—this will give you a specific device ID (e.g., USB\VID_0BDA&PID_8771). You can then search this ID online to identify the exact model.

To fix the issue, try removing the device completely by right-clicking it in Device Manager > Uninstall device, then check Delete the driver software for this device before confirming. After that, restart your PC and manually install the latest driver from Realtek’s official site or your motherboard/laptop manufacturer’s support page. If the issue persists, let me know the Hardware ID, and I’ll help track down the right driver!

    Best,

    Eric

I just pulled it out completely, I think I had this adapter on the system since Windows 7 days, and the upgraded system now has motherboard-integrated Bluetooth Adapters onboard. So I'll just leave this off from now on. Probably wouldn't have even thought twice about it, if this issue hadn't happened.

Yes, you correct Qualcomm acquired CSR. You can try to use the driver from Qualcomm in their website.

Yes, I looked up the manufacture code, and turns out it's not even Realtek, it's made by Cambridge Silicon Radio Ltd (CSR). So I knew what that was, so I pulled it out of the USB slot, and put it back in. It now shows as Generic Bluetooth Radio. I think CSR no longer exists, it might be part of Qualcomm now.
