Can't disable Windows 11 Taskbar Peek / Thumbnail Preview. Changing Performance Settings>Visual effects and/or gpedit.msc does not work.

I cannot disable the Taskbar thumbnail previews in Windows 11. It's unclear whether this feature is a thumbnail preview or "peek" as provided for in the many, many, settings windows and it's help pages direct me to, none of which work. I am aware that the Group Policy Editor isn't included in Windows 11 Home edition, however there are hundreds of tech posts which say installing it is the solution. I find that the policies included in GPEDIT relate only to Windows 10 and prior versions (indeed you can only filter by Win 10 downwards) and have no effect on Windows 11. Why so many advise people to use this is beyond me. Also it is so annoying that the new Windows 11 settings UI has no toggle for this feature, nor does Control Panel except the Performance Options panel which also has no effect, see attached image.

I had though this was a useful feature until using my Browser where I found multiple open tabs meant that the screen gets filled with thumbnail previews which won't load anything and it's totally useless and clutters the screen.

I have been a Linux (Ubuntu) user for many years but decided to return to Windows for various reasons only to find that I am spending inordinate amounts of time just trying to get the thing working in an acceptable manner and discovering that the Windows 11 interface is only a skin over remnants from Vista, Windows NT etc. I am so disappointed by it so far. Changing even the most simple user interface setting is counterintuitive and time consuming and none of the so-called advice seems informed enough to be helpful. I have had this computer from new for less than two weeks and have hardly altered a thing so it's not me, it's you(Windows 11).

I have tried all 3, disable peek in system performance, regedit, gpedit, and after restarting the **** preview popup continues to show up (and often stay up until I click one of the **** windows that I already have open). It happens in all browser and all programs, have nothing to do with Firefox or Edge, but it speaks volumes that someone would reply with "have you tried Edge?"...

I believe what Mercury Flows is saying is this does not work, it's a bug: Performance Options > Enable Peek
Un-checking Enable Peek does nothing, when it should disable Peek.

    Hi Nicholas,

Apparently you don't know much about the Windows interface. You don't know that the settings don't work no matter what we do. (I tried gpedit, regedit, 3rd party software etc)
After the last update Neither of methods disabled the Taskbar Thumbnails in windows 11.

And you can only say us to submit feedback because of Microsoft attaches great importance to user experience.

I can say %100 sure Microsoft DOESN'T attaches great importance to user experience. They are ruining the user experience.

We just want to use it with our own styles freely.

They can easily put an option that works to disable that thumbnails.

    Regards

This answer is actually a f****g joke. You do realise you havent gone anywhere near an answer other than, "get f****d, gimme more money to make the UX not complete s*** !". i Just began having this issue & have also tried all the above fixes yet no, Microsoft once again puts profits before the user and continues to sueeze every single penny out they can get from selling features that once appeared by default back to users with copy pasta responses rather than actual answers.

Please pull your collective heads out of your rear ends and just give us a usable and functioning OS without the useless bloat that seems to have been the focus of the last few years.

    Hi Nicholas,

I didn't have an issue with disabling the Taskbar Peek / Thumbnails until today. I was able to disable these and when I clicked on the icon of an application, I had a nice vertical list of all open windows for that application, , e.g. also for open File Explorer windows or Excel or Word files. This was crucial for me as due to my work I typically have to have larger number of files open at the same time.

However, after the installation of the latest Windows update (KB5051987) today, I can't disable these annoying functions anymore. My guess is that this update unintentionally changed something in this regard, hence the increase in complaints in recent days.

May I ask you (especially Microsoft) to fix this problem with a new update as soon as possible?

Update: Uninstalling KB5051987 solved the issue and also led to performance improvements (after the installation of this update there was a noticeable slow-down when the system is set up after restart. Now it is faster again).

    Best regards,

    ZellDing
