Rust and task manager crashing my pc.

So basically, recently my rust out of the blue began crashing. This would happen during startup and later on during the "opening scene" part of joining a rust server. When it was crashed I couldn't end the process in any normal way. And it also made me unable to launch any new applications (in any form of rust crashing that I will mention this happens), basically I could try to interact with stuff but it'll just be stuck on loading. I was like "Okay task manager it is" but when I right click the taskbar then click task manager, my pc freezes, it's stuck forcing me to hold down my power button for 10 seconds and completely reboot the pc.

I did many things over the next week to fix this:

-Updated gpu drivers

-Updates system drivers

-Deleted a windows update that was supposedly interfering with rust

-Gave rust the ability to bypass windows firewall

-Reset my system stuff in cmd and attempted to clear cache (idrk what this was)

-Redownloaded the game

-Deleted microsoft visuals and downloaded the new and updates version

-Updated my BIOS settings

-Returned my BIOS settings to default in case of any unknown overclocking

And. maybe some more stuff.

When I deleted the windows update (24h2) I couldn't redownload it because it would be stuck on zero and try to download. When I had to restart my pc for something, it would attempt to download itself and fail so my pc would be stuck in restarting. To fix this I returned my pc to a save point before I did anything (except the updates).

After this rust has been working okay....kind off...

So basically the task manager issue was according to some people because of my intel cpu being infected with the problems of voltage etc. I had it for a year before updating my BIOS to get the microcode to fix it and it only showed signs in rust. But they also said in games with specific engines like fortnite could crash, but I never crashed in fornite, UNTIL I did once right after that. My game just got really weird and I tried to open task manager to see what was happening and it crashes my pc. Since then fortnite has never done that again.

Literally just now I tried to open rust and it said it has to close because steam isn't open, so try to re-open it with steam, but when I closed it, I couldn't interact with steam. I would click the windows button, search "steam" and try to click it, and it would either not respond or just be stuck on loading, this is just like what used to happen. I wondered if task manager would crash the pc because of these signs, so I opened it and behold, IT CRASHED!

I need to fix this, because though I have it better than before where I can actually play rust, I really dislike these crashes and think it might develop into something worse If I don't act on it.

This is a common random error I see in event viewer after a crash idk if it's relevant tho:

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Users\ethan\AppData\Local\CapCut\CapCut.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "" on line . A component version required by the application conflicts with another component version already active. Conflicting components are:. Component 1: C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.26100.2454_none_85b89f79f7add666.manifest. Component 2: C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\manifests\amd64_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.26100.2454_none_3e0b68a2e331ad60.manifest.

EDIT: I found another error that might be relevant, I have tried to much stuff to change to permissions and it didn't work using chatgpt, so I'll just wait for a knowledgeable person to help me here:

    Hi Ethan Sooklal

The problem may mainly come from the game itself. Since this community does not participate in the development and maintenance of any game, I suggest you contact the official support staff of this game. Perhaps they can provide you with more precise guidance in this regard.

Before this, you can try to collect crash logs to make communication more efficient:

    Collect crash logs

Find the logs folder in the game file path (usually the game crash log is here)

Package the most recent .log files (especially the logs corresponding to the crash time).

    Best wishes

Update: I did the in-place update, I got past startup on rust, but when trying to join a server it got stuck on opening scene again. I had task manager open from before launching the game, but when I interacted with it, my pc didn't crash but because of rust crashing it caused some problems I already mentioned:

    -Nothing loading

    -Unable to launch applications

    -Just anything else like that ;-;

*Sigh* bro I need help I just wanna play rust

Hey, so I tried doing some stuff but it hasn't worked.

I did the sfc /scannow and the DISM/Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth commands:

-the first command said there were no problems

-the second command was stuck on 62.5%, but the second time it worked. Didn't fix rust.

A quick update, when I launch rust now, it says "Is steam open" etc. and when I close it to reopen the game, it stays on 'Running' and doesn't change and then task manager crashes the pc and I can't interact etc. already went through this.

The COM server permission issue solution didn't work, I didn't understand which file or name was the "relevant COM server application", I looked for some of the random numbers and couldn't find them in the sea of files.

I was going to try to In-Place Upgrade but I cannot back up my pc, I can't pay for a plan on microsoft and I don't have an external device with enough storage to back up really anything. So I am really confused what to do next.

Also this was in the event viewer, I am not sure if it's relevant

    Hi Ethan Sooklal

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community

Understanding that your problem is running down while playing the game

    Rust and the game crashes:

This may be related to graphics card drivers, DirectX or other system components. Try completely uninstalling and reinstalling the latest graphics card drivers. o Check the system requirements for Rust to make sure your hardware meets them.

    Task Manager issues:

If it is related to the Intel CPU, make sure you have applied the latest BIOS updates and microcode patches.

Try using an alternative task manager such as Process Explorer.

Process Explorer is an advanced system monitoring tool developed by Sysinternals, a division of Microsoft. It can be seen as an enhanced version of Windows' own task manager.

Process Explorer - Sysinternals | Microsoft Learn

    Permission and activation issues:

Based on the error message, there appears to be a component version conflict and a permissions issue.

Try running the System File Checker and DISM utility to repair possible system file corruption:

    sfc /scannow

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    Check and repair registry permissions:

    Open Registry Editor (regedit).

    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SeCEdit

Right click on SeCEdit and select “Permissions”.

Ensure the SYSTEM and Administrators groups have full control privileges.

Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. COM Server permissions issue:

This may be related to the permissions of a Windows component or service. Try the following steps:

    Run “comexp.msc” (Component Services)

Expand “Computer” > “My Computer” > “DCOM Configuration”

Locate the relevant COM server application

    Right-click > Properties > Security tab

Check and adjust startup and activation permissions

    In-Place Upgrade

Disclaimer: Let's try to perform an in-place upgrade, which will refresh your Windows files and operating system and will not delete files or applications. However, we still recommend backing up your computer if it contains important data.

Please follow the detailed steps in the thread below, which has detailed steps and video tutorials
