I need to change my email under Administrator on my computer because I'm trying to close a really old MSN account that I no longer use or want. I think I know how to do it from searching on here, but my questions are:

  1. will I lose all of my files, applications, etc., if I create another profile (as instructed for changing my email) to switch it to?
  2. Is this the correct way to change my email on this computer?
  3. Does it have to be an MSN email?

    Hello, SRVNT-1

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

Thank you for your feedback. In response to your question about changing your administrator account mailbox, I'll answer your questions one by one:

    1. Will I lose files, apps, etc. if I change my mailbox?

Changing the mailbox of your administrator account will not result in the loss of files or applications. Changing your mailbox only modifies your account information and does not affect your personal files or installed applications. This data is usually retained in your user folder.

If you create a new account and set it as an administrator account, it will be a separate account and your files from your old account will not be lost, but you will need to migrate the files manually.

You can also choose to keep your old account and change the mailbox associated with your Microsoft account directly on your existing account.

If you create a new account, the application data will not be retained, but you can transfer some personal data. For data migration, you can refer to the following link:

    1. What is the correct way to change my mailbox?

The steps to change the administrator mailbox are as follows:

Step 1: Open Settings > Accounts.

Step 2: Click Your information and select Manage my Microsoft account.

Step 3: On the Microsoft Account page, click Change Email and follow the prompts to change to your new email address.

Step 4: If you are using a local account, you can also change the mailbox associated with your Microsoft account in Settings after switching to it.

Through the above steps, you don't need to create a new account, but only need to change the mailbox associated with your existing account.

    1. Is it necessary to use MSN mailbox?

No, MSN mailbox is not mandatory. You can use any valid Microsoft mailbox (e.g. Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, or any other Microsoft-provided mailbox). If your goal is to close your old MSN account, you can use another Microsoft mailbox in place of your MSN mailbox.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I look forward to your feedback.

    Best Regards,
