On my new Windows 11 laptop I could not get the Brother scanning feature to work for my Brother MFC-J985DW all-in-one. After many hours I found a solution which hopefully will work for other Brother scanners.
After installing the Brother "Full Driver and Software" package for my printer, I could print from Windows and I could scan using Microsoft's simple Windows Scan app (which is limited to single page scans), but I could not get the Brother ControlCenter4 Scan app to work.
One difference I noticed: on my old Windows 10 computer in the Brother Utilities app, on the Scan tab, when I clicked the "Scanners and Cameras" button, there are two icons: "Brother MFC-J985DW [3cd2af42c890 6]" and "Brother MFC-J985DW LAN". Neither were displayed on my Win 11 laptop after initially installing the Brother "Full Driver and Software" package.
I tried a lot of things over a couple of days, but I believe the following two steps made the difference:
- In the "Printers and Scanners" section of Windows settings (type "Printers" into the Windows search bar and it will show up), there was an entry for "Brother MFC-J985DW Printer". If I click on this entry, the resulting page has one tab "Brother MFCf-J985DW Printer settings", but nothing about a scanner. Back one step on the Printers and Scanner page, I clicked "Add device", and I was somehow able (can't remember exactly, Windows found the option) to add a second entry called "Brother MFC-J985DW Printer (Copy 1)", and when I click on that entry the resulting page has two tabs, "Brother MFC-J985DW Printer (Copy1) settings" and "Scanner settings". When I clicked on the "Scanner Settings" tab and then "Scanner properties" entry I got the same "Scanners and Cameras" dialog as mentioned above, but with only the first of the two icons described above. After a restart, the Brother scan app still would not work.
- I used Windows Update to install a Brother driver update. In Windows Settings, click Windows Update, and click "Check for updates". Then click "Advanced options", then under "Additional options" click "Optional updates", then "Driver updates (n)". There was a driver update called "Brother - Image - 1.0.8.8", which I selected and clicked Download & Install. After a restart, the second icon now showed up under "Scanners and Cameras" and the Brother scan app is now working correctly.
I hope this helps others with similar issues.
I tried both of these but still cannot scan using Control Center or by downloading MS Easy Scan. Very frustrating.
