Windows crashes whenever I plug-in a USB Drive

I have a problem when plugging in USB drives in any USB port, that is, directly into the motherboard, on the case panel, or a USB Hub. Windows Explorer stops responding and sometimes I get a BSOD.

The issue isn't with the USB Drives, as the same drives work perfectly fine on another computer. These include SD Cards (using a reader), USB Sticks and even my Kindle. Mice, keyboards and printers work fine.

I can also rule out hardware issues, since I can read the USB Drives on the same computer when booting into Linux (Ubuntu).

The same drives work perfectly fine when I plug them in, when I boot into Safe Mode. So, definitely not an issue with the drives or hardware.

I have some mini dumps that I can send, since I can't find an option to attach one here.

    Hi David,

    The option to "Keep personal files and Apps" is disabled. Will I lose my Apps?

    Your new minidump file just indicates generic errors, nothing specific as the cause of the crash and I do not see verifier indicated in the date.

    If you enabled Driver Verifier, please disable it now.

    The next option is to perform an in-place repair with the Windows ISO.

    Please follow the steps, this is then not like re-installing Windows, it is just like an update and your personal files, settings and installed software will not be affected.

    to download the Windows 11 ISO

    When the ISO file completes downloading

    Disconnect from the Internet

    Disconnect all external devices with the exception of a mouse or keyboard.

    Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

    Then, in Windows File Explorer, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe and select the Install option.

    That new minidump file just indicated generic errors, nothing specific, we will need to dig deeper to find the problem.

    To try to force Windows to show any faulting drivers, the best option would be to turn on Driver Verifier, let your PC crash 3 times, then you must turn off Driver Verifier, and finally, upload any newly created minidump files

    Before you run Driver Verifier, please create a new System Restore Point

    Note, if you have any difficulty getting into Windows with Driver Verifier enabled:

    Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

    Do this twice

    On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt... etc.

    Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Settings and click Restart

    Upon restart, press 4 to enter Safe Mode

    Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these two commands, then restart your PC.

    verifier /reset

    verifier /bootmode resetonbootfail
