USB 2.0 Drives Not Recognized

For the past few days my USB 2.0 flash drives are either not recognized at all or are only partially recognized when plugged in. USB 3.0 drives work normally. Computer is a Lenovo desktop V50t-13IOB G2 Type 11QE and OS is Windows 11 Pro 23H2. When I boot the same machine into Ubuntu 24.04, all USB ports and all drives work normally. This appears to be a Windows driver issue, but the latest updates and drivers are installed. Any suggestions?

Hi, I’m Vinay. Thanks for reaching out.

I’m here to help you today.

It seems like a driver issues or power management settings issue . So please try below troubleshooting steps

1.Reinstall drivers by pressing Win + R - Type Device Manager - Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers - Right click on each USB Root Hub and Generic USB Hub and select Uninstall device - Restart your computer then windows will automatically reinstall those drivers.

2.Sometimes USB selective suspend can cause issues with USB 2.0 issues . So go to Control panel - Power options - Click Change plan settings - Click Change advanced plan settings - Expand USB settings - USB selective suspend setting and set it to Disabled - Click apply and Restart your computer.

    1. If still you are facing the issue then download and install Lenovo Vantage application from Microsoft store , then run the updates through the app .

I hope this resolves your issue! If you have any queries, please let me know.

    Hi, Vinay -

    Thanks for your reply.

    1. I uninstalled/reinstalled the USB drivers using Device Manager, no change.
    2. I had disabled USB selective suspend yesterday but checked again and it is still disabled.
    3. I ran the Lenovo scan/update yesterday which resulted in a couple of updates not related to the USB ports, no change. Ran again today to see if there was anything new, nothing.

Since everything works correctly when I boot into Ubuntu it is clear that this is a Windows driver issue, at least as related to whatever drivers they supply for my Lenovo machine.

If you have any other suggestions please let me know, otherwise I will wait for the next Windows update to see if anything has changed. This is not a serious problem for me, just a nuisance, as I'd like to continue to use my old USB hardware with Windows as well as with Linux.

I can let you know few other troubleshooting steps also .

1.Disable fast startup in Control Panel - Power Options - Choose what the power buttons do - Click Change settings that are currently unavailable - Uncheck Turn on fast startup then Restart your computer and check if the issue persists.

2.Perform a Clean Boot by Pressing Win + R, type msconfig
Under Services tab - check Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable all.
Under the Startup tab - click on open Task Manager - disable all startup items, and restart the system.

Now Plug in the USB 2.0 drive and see if it is recognized.

    1. I had previously disabled fast startup but tried enabling/disabling it again, no change.
    2. I disabled all non-Microsoft services and all startup items in Device Manager and the USB 2.0 drives worked normally. I re-enabled the services but left the startup items disabled and the USB 2.0 drives continued to work. I spent about two hours selectively enabling/disabling startup items in groups but was not able to pinpoint the problem, maybe because there is more than one.

At this point, unfortunately, I have run out of time to devote to this odd situation. I thank you very much for your help and if I get time in the future to look into it further I will post anything interesting that I find.
