Can't change refresh rate to 120Hz in Windows

While on the sample laptop I can set a refresh rate of 120 Hz for my screen using Ubuntu Noble I can only do 60Hz on Windows 11.

I have two video cards, and I installed the latest driver for both.

  • Intel UHD Iris Xe
  • Nvidia RTX A4000 Laptop GPU

I tried from:

  • NVIDIA Control Panel (no such option)
  • Intel Graphics Command Center (no such option)
  • System > Display > Advanced display (the option is there but 60 Hz is the only option)

I also made sure all latest drivers and OS updates are installed.

Any ideas?

As you can see it's grayed out, I can't change the resolution. Btw, if it matters, I am logged on as an Administrator.

Correct, it has 4k resolution. And I also can’t change this. Its selected as default and I don’t habe the option to change it.

    Hi Lotsie__

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community

Understanding that your problem does not allow you to change the refresh rate to 120Hz in Windows

I noticed that you have a 4k resolution, which may be due to bandwidth issues

You could try changing it to 1080p to see if the 120hz option comes up

If it does, it is confirmed to be a bandwidth limitation issue

Contact me if you need anything else.

    Best wishes

Thank you for the quick response, unfortunately it didn't help.

Also, in Nvidia Control Panel (which I reinstalled several times) I'm not seeing the option to edit refresh rate, nor screen resolution.

    Hi Lotsie__

To enable 120Hz on your screen in Windows 11, try the following steps:

    1. Ensure the Correct GPU is Active: Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics and set the NVIDIA GPU to High performance for applications needing higher refresh rates.
    2. Clean Install Graphics Drivers: Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to remove both Intel and NVIDIA drivers, then reinstall the latest drivers from their official websites.
    3. Force 120Hz in NVIDIA Control Panel: In NVIDIA Control Panel, go to Change resolution and create a Custom resolution with 120Hz.
    4. Check Power and Display Settings: Ensure you're on High Performance mode in Power Options, and if using a docking station, check that the port supports 120Hz.
    5. Verify BIOS Settings: Check the BIOS for settings related to the primary GPU (set NVIDIA as the primary if possible).

    I hope this helps.
