Windows Modules Installer Worker Crash Blocking Updates After Upgrading to 24H2 and Stuck Build Version at 26100.1742

I am facing persistent crashes with the Windows Modules Installer Worker on my system, resulting in failed cumulative updates and an inability to upgrade my Windows build. The issue started since my upgradation to 24H2, when TiWorker.exe stopped working with a critical error referencing cbscore.dll. Since then, I have been unable to apply updates, leaving my system vulnerable and outdated. Updated gets installed, then gets stuck at 40% while PC is restarting. Then it undoes the changes showing the message "Something didn't go as planned."

Here is the error detail captured from the Reliability Monitor:

Steps Already Tried:

  1. Ran Windows Update Troubleshooter: Got help from Microsoft's official helpline. Useless.
  2. Executed SFC and DISM Scans:
    • sfc /scannow completed with no issues.
    • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ran successfully but did not resolve the problem.
  3. Cleared Windows Update Cache: Deleted contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution after stopping relevant services.
  4. Clean Boot: Disabled all non-Microsoft services and startup items, but the issue persisted.
  5. Reliability Monitor Review: Recorded multiple warnings and critical events related to failed updates.

I suspect a corrupt or malfunctioning cbscore.dll file or other servicing stack component might be causing the issue. However, none of the steps I’ve tried have resolved it. I’m seeking guidance on additional troubleshooting steps or whether an in-place upgrade or full reinstall is necessary.

A snapshot of all the problems reported is attached.

I have had this problem ever since upgrading to 24H2. It has gotten progressively worse. Even Defender crashes...

I've done several fresh installs of Win11... unfortunately the Media Creation Tool won't let me get an older version.

    Tried with new nvme.

    Tried with with new ram.

Tried with Nvidia card and onboard video only.

There is clearly something that has come in an update the last 2-4 months that has significantly affected functionality.

MSI MEG Z790 ACE MAX (with TPM)

    Core i9 14900K

    Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080

    Corsair DDR5 (2x48gb) and (2x32gb)

I only have a 50% success rate of running sfc /scannow. When it bombs out, I get these errors in the event log.

    Hi, Biscotti Hublot.

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community.

From the error message you provided, it seems that Windows Modules Installer Worker crashed and it is related to the cbscore.dll module. You have tried some steps, but these did not solve your problem. I understand your confusion about this problem.

This kind of crash is usually a sign of a problem with Windows Update or component services.

First of all, it is commendable that you tried to solve the problem by yourself through the solutions you mentioned.

Maybe other users can troubleshoot according to the solutions you tried when they encounter similar problems. Let me express my gratitude to you.

This may be related to corrupted operating system files or invalid Windows Update components.

Here are some further troubleshooting steps you can try:

    Repair Windows Update components

Although you have tried to clean the update cache, you can try to use some more specific commands to repair Windows Update components:

    Manually reset Windows Update components:

Press Win + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).

Run the following commands in order to stop the update service and related processes:

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop bits

    net stop cryptsvc

    net stop msiserver

    Delete Windows Update cache files:

    ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

    Restart all services:

    net start wuauserv

    net start bits

    net start cryptsvc

    net start msiserver

    Try to update again.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, consider doing an in-place upgrade, which is reinstalling Windows using the same version of the installation media, which preserves your files and most settings.

If the issue persists and you are unable to apply updates, a complete reinstall may be the ultimate solution.

    Download Windows 11

We look forward to hearing from you!

    Best Regards.
