March 2025 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 (KB5053598) Caused Loss of Audio

On March 11, 2025, I downloaded the March 2025 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 (KB5053598). There were no issues until March 18, 2025. I was watching a YouTube video (which I do on a daily basis) and the screen went black. I could still hear the audio. I had to attempt a hard restart, which after pressing the on/off button on the computer caused a blue screen to appear stating 'Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart." The restart worked but then I had no audio. Once I uninstalled the update noted above, my audio returned. All my drivers were, and are, up-to-date.

My computer is an Asus notebook S5606MA-DS96.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. My name is Bernard a Windows fan like you. I'll be happy to help you out today, my timezone is UTC +8.

I understand the issue you have, there is nothing to worry I am here to assist, seems that there is an incompatibility with the audio driver and the KB5053598, moreover, kindly follow the steps below for us to sort out the issue:

    Method 1. Run Audio troubleshooter:

Press the Windows Key + R then type in:

    msdt.exe /id AudioPlaybackDiagnostic

Then hit OK and follow the prompt to run Audio Troubleshooter.

Method 2. Roll Back Audio driver:

-Press the Windows key + X

    -Go to Device Manager

-Expand the Sound, video and game controller

-Look for Realtek (R) Audio or High Definition audio

    -Right-click and click "Update Driver"

-Look for "Browse my computer for driver"

-Click "Let me pick drivers available drivers on my computer"

-Choose an old driver or other name of driver then select it and hit next until it installs.

    -Restart the device and check.

Let me know how it goes and I hope that helps.

Hi Jay, thank you for that information, and yes, it is better if you can wait for another update, in addition, what I can highly suggest is to post the issue on the feedback hub so that developers will also be aware of this problem and hopefully the fix will apply as soon as possible.

    Hello Bernard,

Again, thank you. I reinstalled KB5053598. Of note, the audio still worked but it worked for one week after initially installing the update. I then rolled back the driver. Meanwhile, I have paused Windows Update. Hopefully, Microsoft will address the many issues that appear to exist with the update and will eventually issue a fix.

    Regards,

    Jay

Hi Jay, you are correct, moreover, I recommend installing the update first, then rolling back the driver, so that you will have the update and the driver will be compatible.

    Hello Bernard,

Thank you for responding with assistance regarding my issue. I appreciate your time.

    Method 1:

Since uninstalling KB5053598 fixed the audio issue, the result of running the Audio Troubleshooter is that there were no issues found.

    Method 2:

I do see there is one prior Realtek (R) driver available. I presume the goal here is to roll the driver back and then reinstall KB5053598 so my computer will have all the security patches included in the latest update, correct?

    Again, thank you Bernard.

    Regards,

    Jay
