Weird Laptop Fan Issue – Spins Up Randomly, Then Stops Completely

I have an HP 255 G7 Notebook PC with the following specs:

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 3500U
  • GPU: 2GB Vega 8
  • RAM: 8GB DDR4
  • Storage: 256GB M.2 SSD (ADATA)

Usage Background:

I've been using this laptop for 4 years. Initially, I did programming (Android Studio and emulators), but later switched to gaming. For the past 3 years, I’ve been playing Dota 2 daily for 5-7 hours.

Previous Issue & Repair:

About 6 months ago, I had a serious issue:

  • After several hours of gaming, I left my laptop on. When I came back, it had gone into Sleep mode.
  • After waking it up, while browsing, it suddenly shut down.
  • When I turned it back on, before even reaching the Windows logo, the fan started spinning at full speed.
  • GPU temperature spiked rapidly (e.g., jumping from 40°C to 65°C, then 85°C).
  • Even opening simple apps (like the Windows Calculator) was impossible.

I took it to a repair shop, and they found the issue was related to a voltage control component (possibly a MOSFET), which they replaced. After that, the laptop worked perfectly fine... until now (3 months later), when a new issue started.

Current Issue (Fan Behavior):

  • When the system is idle (e.g., browsing or typing), the fan suddenly starts spinning at full speed.
  • After a few minutes, the fan completely shuts off and won’t turn back on, even when the temperature rises.
  • Restarting the laptop temporarily fixes the issue.
  • This never happens under heavy load (e.g., while playing Dota 2).

What I’ve Tried (No Fix Yet):

  • Downgraded from Windows 11 to Windows 10.
  • Stopped using emulators and other heavy programs.
  • Lowered Dota 2 settings as much as possible.
  • Disabled Sleep and Hibernate completely.

Yet, the problem still persists.

My Questions:

  1. Could this be a software issue (BIOS, drivers, power settings), or is it hardware-related?
  2. Has anyone experienced a similar issue with this laptop model or AMD laptops in general?
  3. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

The best option would be to go to the support page for your laptop on the HP website, then from there, download and install the version of chipset drivers they recommend and while there, if you do not have your drive encrypted with Bitlocker, check for any BIOS update that may need to be installed.

If that does not resolve the problem, open the old Control Panel, set View to large icons, then open the Power Options applet, what power plan is set in there and what other power plans are available?
