Hello, Autranaut
Welcome to the Microsoft community.
Thank you for your feedback. I understand that you are experiencing an issue with AMD laptops skipping frames when playing YouTube in high quality in Edge browser, here are some troubleshooting options:
- Visit the official AMD driver page → select “Radeon Graphics Cards” → download “Adrenalin Edition 24.5.1 or higher” (optimized for 7000 series).
Select “Driver Only” mode during installation (to avoid Radeon software conflicts).
To configure Radeon video decoding
Right-click on Desktop → Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition → Settings → Video → Enable “Hardware Accelerated Decoding” and “VP9/AV1 Support”.
Advanced → Customize Resolution → Add 3840x2160@60Hz (trick YouTube into allocating higher bandwidth).
- Type edge://settings/system in the address bar → Turn off “Efficiency Mode” and “Hibernate Tabs”.
Force Media Foundation Rendering
Type edge://flags in the address bar → Search for the following option and enable it:
“Enable Media Foundation for ClearPlay”
“Override software rendering list”
“Enable VP9 for Windows 10” (even if the system is Win11)
Locking HEVC Decoding
Install the HEVC decoding extension → Restart Edge.
- Force YouTube decoding format
Install User-Agent Switcher → Set UA to Chrome 120 (triggers YouTube to assign H.264 streams).
Or use the h264ify extension to force H.264.
Verify hard-decode status
While playing a video, press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+D to open Stats for Nerds → Check Viewport/Frames and Codecs:
If av01/opus is displayed → hard decode is not active
If it shows vp09.00.51.08.01.000000 → the hard disassembly is working.
- You can try another browser to see if the problem is the same. For example, Chrome.
