Windows 11 version 24H2 update fails with error code 0x80070002

My Acer Predator PHN18-71 (Windows 11 version 23H2, Intel Core i7-14700HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070) has been trying to install the Windows 11 version 24H2 update since it first appeared in my Check for Updates window a few months ago. The update always fails, listing error code 0x80070002 as the broad issue. I have, to the best of my ability, researched all the recommended things to try to make this update succeed:

Check Time Settings

Update drivers

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Rename the Software Distribution and catroot2 Folders

Restart Windows Update Service

Check System Files with DISM for inconsistencies

I'm sure that I'm missing a few - I'll try to flesh out my list.

Yesterday I made a fresh backup image of my C: drive and performed an iso file 24H2 installation. It failed, so I ran SetupDiag. It responded with only one issue:

"Error: SetupDiag reports a fatal error on driver migrations. ErrorCode: 0x80070002"

I have the zip folder of files produced by SetupDiag.

The only clue I have to a possible source of this problem is that my computer's audio system is malfunctioning. These issues began after my machine started failing system updates. I can't get any sound out of my laptop's speakers or my headphone jack. I have to use USB speakers or a USB external sound card to get any audio output, which apparently also requires disabling the Microsoft High Definition Audio Device (otherwise I get no audio from any source). The Realtek Audio Driver has stopped appearing in my Device Manager even though it says it is installed after I reinstall it from the Acer website. The Realtek Audio Console window is now empty except for this:

"Realtek Audio Console doesn't support for this machine."

It used to be full of controls that functioned.

The Intel Smart Sound Technology BUS in Device Manager shows error code 39:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing."

No other drivers show any errors in Device Manager.

I've seen multiple people post online about this apparent audio driver / failed update issue with very similar symptoms. But I haven't seen how or if they resolved them.

I'm admittedly not a very capable or experienced system administrator. I'd appreciate any help I can get to resolve these issues.

    Hi Roy,

Two outstanding items that I am aware of:

    1. I don't see the Intel MVA driver listed in Device Manager and I haven't done anything about that yet.

You can add that driver to the drivers store using the "Add driver" option in Driver Store Explorer. If the system needs it, let it use it automatically.

    1. Intel Driver & Support Assistant says that Intel® Graphics Driver 32.0.101.6647 is available to be installed.

I'm not sure which version of the driver is currently installed. Please check the Intel® Graphics Driver version via Device Manager. If you have a previous version of the driver, then install the latest driver using Intel support assistant.

    Hi Roy,

Yes, please retry the 24H2 setup. The log shows that the setup was not idling anywhere; it was still processing. In some logs, it would be idling for hours due to an inaccessible file or something, but that's not the case here.

You can do the following before attempting the setup again.

    1. Clean boot Windows.  A clean boot is the process of starting Windows without loading third-party apps and services. See this Microsoft article for more information.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd

(Step 3 in the above article is very important. You need to first enable "Hide all Microsoft Services" before clicking "Disable all".)

    1. Enable Memory Integrity. To enable memory integrity in Windows, go to Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation details → Memory integrity. If it shows any incompatible drivers, post the screenshot here.

    1. Running the 24H2 setup without dynamic updates.
    • Right-click on the Windows 11 24H2 ISO and choose "Mount." This assigns the ISO a drive letter.
    • Run setup.exe from the ISO drive. This starts the in-place upgrade/repair installation.
    • This starts the setup dialog. In the initial screen, click “Change how Setup downloads updates”
    • Select “Not right now”, and continue the process.

// Should I run it again and just try to wait it out? How long is too long? Is there any way to tell if it is still working? //

It shouldn't take 2 hours on an SSD. But as long as it's processing and there is disk activity, you can let it run even if it takes more than 2 hours.

    Hi Roy,

Yes. 0x800704C7 is ERROR_CANCELLED. I also see this:

    ***

2025-03-20 19:28:14, Info MOUPG CInstallUI::ConfirmCanceled: User cancel confirmed

2025-03-20 19:28:14, Info MOUPG CInstallUI::OnProgressChanged: Cancel is requested. Returning ERROR_REQUEST_ABORTED

    ***

May I know why it was canceled? You can install IntelMvaExtension.inf after the 24H2 update. I don't think it's a boot-critical driver.
